Question

Disabling language auto-detection stops relinking problems on startup

Hi,

I wanted to share a learning with you: Over the past few weeks, we faced an issue where starting up Premiere and the process of relinking files was taking a long time, sometimes making Premiere unusable for 1-2 hours or it didn't work at all. We were able to identify the cause today: under Preferences - Transcription - "Enable language auto-detection." When this option is checked, Premiere seems to re-analyze every clip at startup. When it's unchecked, everything runs smoothly.

Hope this might help someone!

Kind regards,
Hendrik

Thanks Kerstin. Is there any other thoughts on this relinking issue of what it could be? Or is our best bet to update mid production? Thank you.

Hi @graces37468274

you need to update to Premiere Pro version 23.4 or newer to use this feature.

Hi forum and @alexander-riss @Kerstin Ebert ,

We are experiencing a catastrophic slowdown that seems related.  After a project crashing and needing Force Quit, PPro is completely unresponsive.  Project file opens fine, but we are not able to operate anything within the program after opening.  The only unusual thing we've found is the " Relinking Media" dialog in the Process window is completely stalled and seems to be taking all of the available RAM.  This relinking appears to be taking hours or not be progressing at all.

Language auto-detection is NOT enabled.

Could really use an assist!

Hi @Alluring_Sunshine5C7C

thank you for reporting this. Can you please answer the following questions so we get more insights:

- Is auto-transcription enabled?

- Is "Visual Analysis" enbaled in the "Media Intelligence Analysis & Transcription" preferences (Premiere Pro -> Settings...)?

- Are you opening a recovered project after the force quit or the original project? Before it became unresponsive for the first time, did the relinking process finish completely?

Thanks,

Kerstin

Hi @Hendrik N.

we have worked on some improvements which should hopefully fix the performance issues you are seeing. You can check this in the 25.0x15 BETA build (or newer). Please let me know if you see any differences.

Best,

Kerstin

Hi @Hendrik N.

thank you for reporting this. We are currently aware of a performance related bug when "Enable language auto-detection" is checked – even when auto-transcription is turned off – and we're working on a fix for that. For now the workaround is to uncheck language auto-detection.

I'll keep you posted once there are updates on the fix!

Best,

Kerstin

Hi Stan,

Auto-transcription is not activated. The files are always relinking every time we restart a project. It's not the relinking of offline files we're encountering, but rather the relinking process shown in the progress window. Normally, this shouldn’t take too long. However, with over a terabyte of files and proxies attached, it can take up to three minutes on the first startup even after deactivating the language auto-detection - which is not a big problem.

We've observed the issue described in my original post in Premiere 24.3 running on various machines, including both Intel and Apple Silicon, under macOS. Both the files and the project are stored on a NAS with a 10G connection.

Best,
Hendrik
