Effects Panel Pops Up every time audio track is selected / highlighted - how do I stop this nuisance

Every time I select an audio track that has a compressor on it the panel to edit that effect pops up and covers the timeline.  Records indicate that at one point there was a setting to disable this annoying nuisance but now according to interenet searches that is no longer possible and I appear to be stuck with this workflow blocker.  Can you help?  If not please fix this bug.  I can either click on the track with a cursor or if I highlight the track attempting to move it, this occurs.

I just tried and I can't replicate.

I don't get that effect to pop up no matter whether I'm grabbing someplace on the video or audio part of the clip.

So I do wonder if something is off or set wrong on your machine?

Hi @scm28,

I'm sorry to hear Premiere is causing workflow problems.  Can you tell me which version of Premiere you are using?  Like Neil, I did a quick test and couldn't replicate.  Are you able to create a screen recording of the issue?  We need a few more details to help with this issue. @Rach McIntire I'm using Mac OS Sequoia 15.6.1 and I always keep Premiere Pro updated to the latest version.  M1 Mac with 16gb of RAM.  I read that Adobe used to have a checkbox to enable/disable the "feature" of “Automatically Open Effect Controls Panel” in preferences but it appears that for some reason someone decided to remove that option.

Huh ... I've used Premiere daily for over a decade, and don't recall any such option. But then, I've never had the behavior you are getting either ... which again, would be a right royal pain. And I clicked and dragged all over the audio and video clips. 

What you're getting is just so weird! Wow.

Thanks for that extra info.  I still haven't been able to reproduce this.  Would you be able to capture a screen recording of this happening?  Is it happening in a specific workspace or any of them?

I generally use the Editing workspace, and occasionally use shift~ to enlarge the timeline and the video area.  I'm 99% sure this bug occurs in both states, when timeline is enlarged and when it's in the normal Editing workspace.

I've spent quite a bit of time trying to replicate this, with both single and multi band compressor effects, dynamics which also includes a compressor, and in all nine of my custom workspaces and the 'native' Edit workspace.

I've grabbed and moved the clip, the keyframeable line on the audio, the Fx badge, unlinked the clip and moved that separately, every variation I can think of, and I can't get this to happen.

Yes, it would be very frustrating ... but as I can't replicate, I've got no clue what's going on in your computer.

So again, a video of this happening on your machine would be ever so helpful to nail this down.

I came in here and was SHOCKED by your comments to learn that this isn't just a feature as intended? I wanted to learn how to turn it off ***as this has been occuring to me for years and years*** across many different updates *AND* desktops. Never ONCE did I assume this was an error, just a feature I was not bothered enough until today to try and turn off.

Perhaps the reason some of you are having trouble replicating it is that it's a per-account thing?

Oh wow wait, I figured it out (for me, at least), the issue is that when the audio effect box is open, clicking back on the timeline or anywhere else outside that box makes the effect box go away, but then when you click on that audio clip again, it pops right back up

HOWEVER, if you actually close the effect box with the normal "X" in the top corner, it won't continue to pop up until you choose to open it again like you normally would. I wasn't ever *properly closing it* because I didn't realize I needed to

Wow, how can this bug continue to exist?  It's a UX nightmare🤦.  @charlotteh50606133 Do you happen to have a screenshot of the X in the effects box?  It would help everyone to have that as a reference and thanks in advance for this - if it solves my problem you're a miracle worker!

@scm28 It's just the normal "Windows close" X that's on every window, tho I suppose Macs will have the red close-out button or whichever it is instead

I don't know what to call it - bug, by design, feature request (to autoclose when deselected)? But here's what is happening:

The dialogue box being discussed is, I think, the "Clip FX Editor," not Effects or Effects Controls panels. One way to get that box is when you click "edit" in the Effect Controls panel on an effect, such as audio pitch shifter, custom setup. Once you do, the dialogue is active until you click on edit again or "x" out the dialogue. (I'm on Win11 and I see the x out. What do Mac users see?)

The dialogue is associated with the clip that is selected when it is invoked. If you do something that deselects the clip, it "disappears" until you reselect the clip, and then - Surprise! But it's really been there all along. Clicking in panels that do not deselect the clip keeps the dialogue on screen. It is not dockable, and there's no OK or Cancel buttons - changes appear to take effect immediately.

I think you've got the situation nailed, Stan. I can replicate that behavior of course. But not the ECP itself.

One does need to close the Edit windows, pure and simple.
