Image colour flickering in playback monitor. No issues when playing original file on VLC.

Hello

I've experienced the following issue a lot which is the cause f

A part of my project has  colour flickering in playback monitor. This issue has occured repeatedly over time. As I said, None of these issues occured when playing tne source file on VLC.

My PC is pefectlty equipped to let everything run smoothly, I've cleaned my media cache, reset my workspace tp default, tried it after creating a new project, my graphics card is up-to-date but to no avail.

I've seen that over the various installments on forums this issue kept being present. I honestly can't comprehend that after so much time and an apparently widespread occurence it's still not fixed through a patch/update. especially as Premiere Pro presents itself as leading software in it"s domain  I'd like tp think that part of that includes reliability and stability.

Your team developed the software, so I'd like to think that at somr point, you can provide a definite solution

Yours Sincerely

JW

Hi @jwdw2769228,

Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums and sorry you are experiencing issues. We need a few more more details to help, like Premiere Pro version you are on and hardware specs. Please see How to Report a Problem.

What type of media file are you you working with? Does this happen with only this file or are you seeing it across different projects and media types?

GPU and system information would be good know. If NVIDIA, are you using the Studio driver?

Sorry for the frustration,
Dani

That looks like a typical GPU driver issue.

So what GPU and driver are you using?

In over a decade on multiple PCs I've never had this, personally. It's a local system issue.

Hi

Thank you for your quick reply.

By GPU do you mean graphics card? If so it's a Nvidia Geforce Game Ready Driver (latest version 580.97)

Here's the rest of my PC Specs

Processor 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400F (2.50 GHz)
RAM 16,0 GB (15,9 GB available)
System Type Windows 11 Pro (64-bits) , x64-processor

I always use MP4-files with a H.264 codec. Encountering a pattern is quite hard.

What I can say is that I'm seeing it accros different projects and clips.

This is off-topic but: is it obligatory to have the Studio Driver? Because I also game quite a lor so I don't really know if I should switch.

Thank you for your help

Thanks for the info @jwdw2769228. Studio is the recommended driver for Premiere Pro, it's designed for more stability with creative applications. (Here some additional information on that: GPU and GPU Driver Requirements for Premiere Pro, and the NVIDIA Studio FAQs).

In addition to trying out the Studio driver, where are the mp4 clips usually from? If you happen to use a lot of screen recordings or the clips happen to have variable frame rates, it is also recommended to transcode these clips into better formats for editing (like ProRes) with constant frame rates to avoid more performance issues.

You didn't list which GPU you have there. Which would be good to know.

Next, that 6 core CPU doesn't have any internal graphics computing ... that is what the F in Intel CPU nomenclature stands for. So there is no internal "hardware" encoding/decoding for H.264/5 long-GOP media in your CPU.

And at only 6 cores, it's barely able to do standard encoding for Premiere anyway. And these days, 16GB of RAM is tiny, again barely enough for Premiere to run.

So you can work in Premiere, but you are probably going to need to work smart ... for instance, using proxies made from  long-GOP H.264/5 clips in ProRes Lt ... they might be larger on disc than the original file, but will go through playback typically a lot better.

Hi Neil Haugen

I'd be glad to give my GPU but where do I find that?

My PC is already a couple years old so my specs are by far no longer high-end.

I m sorry if this comes across as disrespectful, but I'm pretty sure I'm far from the only one who can't buy a new PC at the rate that might be necessary. I might be editing videos as a passion but that doesn't mean I've got the financial means to go out and buy whatever PC I want nor, get a new one every two years

I'm aware that my specs aren't high end but I've already made dozens videos that are fine.

Thank you for your input and understanding.

Hi Dani

This might be an unusual answer but I download videos from Youtube and convert them  to MP4 using 4k Video Downloader+. However, as far as converting formats I can only pick from MKV or MP4.

I'd certaibly consider switching to the Studio Driver, but how much is this choice going to affect other applications like gaming performance? My GPU:  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650.

Not having the latest high powered rig isn't a problem or denigrating thing. Most of us have varying devices. So my desktop is pretty beefy, but my laptop was a beast ... back in 2019.

Now?

I can still use it and just upped it to Win11.

But my comment about working smart is simply tge same as I have to do with that now-old laptop.

Use proxies or previews as needed. Know what codecs and effects it can handle, where it struggles. Make render and replace operations with complex effects on a clip.

So nothing was meant ... but that you need to recognize your rigs capabilities, like with any other hardware. And use brainpower when computer power ain't quite up to the need.

I think nearly everybody has at least some lower-powered kit, we're ALL noobs, just with different spots.

And everyone's mileage always varies.

Yup, all good!
