P: Audio "can't be read quickly enough" from storage

Explorer ,
Apr 02, 2025 Apr 02, 2025

Just started getting this error window today while working on a very simple project that only has a couple After Effects motion graphics clips, and three tracks of audio: VO, music, and light SFX:

Event Details:

Can't access audio

the audio for _____.wav can't be read quickly enough from storage. Please check your storage and try again.

Build:

Windows 11 Pro 26100.3624

12th Gen Intel i7-12700K 3.60 GHz

32 GB of RAM

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

The local C drive is an NVME SSD, but the file in question is stored on a Synology NAS with IronWolf HDDs. Both the computer and the NAS were built from new parts this year.

Premiere: 25.2, installed this week.

The same error happened on a second computer (same build, also connect to the NAS).

Hi there, this is Adolfo from Adobe. We're aware of the issue and are looking into it. It would be great if anyone is willing to share their project with me, as it could help us investigate further. We'll keep you updated in this thread as soon as we have more information.

Does 25.3 address this issue, because I'm tired of updating only to have to roll back to the version that works.

What I've realized is that the error still exists (audio might drop out while previewing), but there is not scary error message that pops up.

1) The audio error does not affect the final export. When you export, the audio will be there

2) When previewing, I have to just pause and play again. Eventually the computer catches up. It's annoying, but it hasn't happened frequently enough to be that much of a headache.

My experience is that 25.3 does not fix the frequent audio drop outs when playing in the time line. Otherwise it seems to work. It is time Adobe fixed the drop-out issue. This is expensive and "professional" software.

I'm having the same problem and it's not only annoying - it's inacceptable. For hours I've been trying to fix it by changing all audio settings possible.

Has this been resolved in the latest 25.3 release? I had to revert back to 25.1 because of this issue. It is the last known (to me) version that does not have this issue. Thank you.

I am using the latest revision. Audio still drops out when playing in the time-line, even on really simple projects. It always exports OK.

Playback is unacceptably bad on PPRO. Having audio drop out constantly means I can never really access whether this edit is working or not. If I had a client in the room with me, I would have to cancel the session, and I have lost a half day of work and pay today trying to figure this out. I am on a fast M3 MacBook Pro playing back 8 discrete 48 kHz audio stems on a 1080 HD sequence. My playback should be screaming fast and easy. Instead the software is barely hobbling along. Please, please fix this. Also, I am stuck on v 25.2 because of a different known bug on v 25.3 with MTS files. Please work on this all the time pronto until it's fixed!!! I am losing money and time here and it's a big drag.

So months later, and its still happening in beta 25.6. are you ever gonna fix this?

I am still having this issue in 25.6 Beta (build 33). It was all working fine until about a week ago.

My system is a Mac Studio 2 running Sequoia 15.6 - three screens and a big project - some of the videos on the drives are 4K and  7 hours long - but it still all played back fine in full resolution..It suddenly started lagging.

I fixed it for the video by starting a new project and importing in the previous sequence after having tried making proxies - which failed, and then trying to consolidate the project with project manager - also failed. However I still gwet a lagging blue playhead and the error about audio playback and can't read fast enough.

I am thinking the 'workaround' to all this time wasting might be to switch to DaVinci Resolve - who is with me?

The only thing I have tried that seems to be helping audio playback a little bit is to increase the I/O Buffer size in the Audio Hardware settings to the maximum of 2048 Samples.

In Mac version: Premiere Pro -> Settings -> Audio Hardware:

I still get the error message, but PPRO is able to hobble through and continue playing audio, although with occassional hiccups still.

Finally, I am able to edit without audio issues. After installing 25.4 there are no audio drop-outs when playing in the time line. Another big improvement is that the audio waveforms load much more quickly. I have edited 41 simple projects with 25.4 and it works for me! Thank you Adobe team.

This just started happening to me, I've been on 25.4 this entire year because some awful bug happens anytime there's an update. I tried upgrading to 25.6 to mediate this issue and it didn't work, so I went back down to 25.4. This has made editing my current project infuriating. It's unacceptable to have these types of bugs included in software that we pay for and rely on professionally. I completed a project last week 8/20, same drive, same settings, I didn't even make proxies and it ran no problem. FIX this.

what's funny is the video project opens in PP 2025 and plays with no issues, so PP beta 25.4 is broken now. GREAT JOB! allow me to down rev to 25.1 so I can get back to work.

@Adolfo H. do you have any Solution?

Hi @marco_6528 quick question.. are you experiencing the issue in the Beta version or the release version of the app? Our developers are actively working on this, and any extra details about your project setup would really help us narrow it down. Since there are thousands of possible configurations, the more context we get, the faster we can address it.

If you’re open to it, please send me a DM and we can set up a quick call to take a closer look at your project. Thanks again for helping us track this down!

Hi @DjentlemanJoe , Quick question are you in the beta build or the release version?

We’re currently investigating this issue. Would you be open to a quick call so we can watch the steps you take to reproduce it? That would really help us narrow down the configurations we’re looking into. Thanks!

It's reassuring to see the issue has not been resolved since at least April 2025. Bravo guys, bravo! The last stable version for me has been 25.1 This is insane, considering it's not free software and it isn't even cheap.

Hi @Anton32910751p307 can you confirm with me that you don't see any audio dropouts on 25.1 but when you try the latest version you get them? Are you willing to get on a quick call so we can repro the issue?

Thanks!

Hi
I am using the latest beta version. However, I have discovered what the issue is.
It was a hardware problem. Since the external SSD was connected to the notebook with an adapter, I also had to connect the power supply (the power cord) via the adapter. The problem has not occurred again since then.

greetings
