P: Extremely lagging and slow when typing captions

Community Beginner ,
Jul 13, 2021 Jul 13, 2021

I have a project that is 1hr 52min long, when I type in the program monitor for captions, it is lagging to the point where I can type a sentence and it will take about a minute AFTER I type and watch one letter slowly appear at a time. This hasn't happened to my other project which I started last week. Is there a reason for this? It;s been going on for months now.

I have 16gb of ram, and am updated to the lastest version of PR2021.

Hi @DailyBread88@roberts2771643@roryn15802577@Bob Sommella, and @K_Belli,

Thanks for your patience on this bug. Launching the app and then opening the project is a workaround. Sorry about that.

Are you still seeing this issue in 24.6? Please let the team know.

Thanks,
Kevin

I have a mac studio with premiere pro and was having the same problem.

I un-enabled all the text boxes I had made up that point (200+), and re-enabled the new text boxes I was working on, and whala! Went right back to being fast again! Then just re-enable all the text boxes when you are done!

I just cleared my cache by using method H from this Adobe help link https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/unofficial-premiere-pro-troubleshooting-guid...

.. and it works like a champ now! 💪

@cristinad35994722,

Thanks for that workaround suggestion. If you see the slowdown happen again, let us know. I wonder a) if it slows down as soon as the needed cache files are rebuilt and/or b) if it slows down as new cache files are added after the rebuild.

The "delete all" is different since it deletes un-needed cache files (inactive projects etc) as well as needed cache files (active) - the needed ones will be recreated right away by PR.

I recently updated my list of caption performance problem workarounds, but this one is not there!

Hi, what do you mean about unenabling and re-enabling the text boxes?  Can you explain in idiot-proof English for me, please?

How do you do that?

I have loads of subtitles over a 30min film and just want to move some of them but there's a terrible lag.  Let's say all the boxes are on video track 4.  How do I do it so that the subtitle I'm working on can be moved to the new position on the screen without the massive lag?  And then move to the next subtitle?

Please advise and thank you so much for your help.  It's been a nightmare.

Ganpati bless.

YOU ARE A LITERAL [Profanity removed by moderator] GODSEND.

EVERYONE, HE'S FIXED IT.

Don't just click on the project to open PP and then the project like me normally do.

Open PP and THEN, when it's loaded, open your most recent project.  {Or whichever one you want.}

Subtitles move normally again.

Also, you know when you open a project, you have to wait for the media to sync up before you can play or edit?  The way the window won't show the video and has a yellow screen saying "Media Pending"?

Well mine would take ages as we've been working on this doc for over half a decade.

Since doing it this way, it syncs up faster.  Is this just me?  Anyway, that's an extra bonus.

If I could buy this chap a pint, I would.  Or tell me a charity to donate to.  My wife is so closed to finishing after a decade - just need to move the subtitles to where she wants centered {as opposed to me putting them where they looked best on the background video.}

And then we thought it would be a nightmare, having to spend minutes moving a subtitle and then waiting 5 mins before you could play the video and then click on the next subtitle box.  Now we can use it normally.  And it's 30 mins in Hindi with English subtitles all the way through.

You've totally saved us.

If you want to give us a name, I can add it to the film credits to go with the other mate who gave us tech help. {[Reference to use of pirated software removed] so we could isolate the dialogue from some vital interviews that had so much background noise they were unusable until he saved the day.}

So if you want your name added to the credits, just tell us what name you want.  {It will be added to the Tech Help: part with our other mate's name.}

One of her previous documentaries, about a huge shanty town in a Manila cemetery won an award, and this one about a caste of hereditary sêx workers in India is even better.  So if it does, Ganpati willing, win an award, you can add that award-winner to your CV.

Just let us know.  We both love you so much for what you've done.  First had this problem in Novemember and have spent the previous 4-5 months reading everything to try to find a solution.

You [Profanity removed by moderator] hero.

Here's wishing you every success in your film making and your life.

And ours.  Let's buy him a pint.  Or ask if he has a charity we can all give a small donation to.  After 10 years, starting on FCP before switching to PP when Mac stopped supporting it, we've got the film finished.  Have all the subtitles correctly translated and in the project, but just needed to move some of them.  Looked like it would take a month as opposed to a day.

I've been reading every forum and blog, watching every video etc since November with no joy.  Until I found this 2-3 days ago.

He's saved us - a literal Godsend.

Best of luck with your film, mate.

Have you read the posts above and below?

This guy's found the solution and it's working for all of us.

Don't just click on the project file on the HDD to open it.

Open PP first.  Then when it's booted, THEN open the project from within PP.

The subtitles move normally again.  {Also, for me, the media syncs quicker so once the project is open, it's a shorter wait until you can start editing.}

The guy's a hero.

I don't know about the "OPEN/ CLOSE" Fix. it didn't work for me. It seems unlikely to fix anything, but i guess by chance it fixed something for some people.

I'm on an M2 macPro experienced major lag using the subtitle tools and making changes. I noticed it was only one specific sequence. After trouble shooting I made a new subtitle track and moved the suibtitles to the new track. Problem fixed.

The problem persists (July, 2024). I am subtitling a film and every time I change one subtitle, it's a nightmare. I am working in to different computers (M2 Mac Mini (8GB of RAM) and iMac Intel 2020, this computer has an upgrade of ram, as it runs at 128 GB). So it is not an issue of RAM, is a problem Premiere. This has been happening since 2021 I think. I have done all the suggestions (delete Caché, delete preferences, open first Premiere and then open the project, and zoom in the sequence), and nothing worked. I still have a very good machine, using all the RAM it can handle, and Premiere continues lagging.

Yes. Its a problem though I haven't experienced recently. Turn off text-follows-sequence. Lower right of transcript window. Turn off all tracks except for captions. Try moving sequence to a new, empty project. I've even created an entirely new sequence in a new project and cut and paste existing sequence into it. Finally, consider exporting and using a text editor.
