P: .MTS video and audio not synched on Mac OS and Adobe 24

Community Beginner ,
Sep 23, 2024 Sep 23, 2024

I am using a MAC Studio M2 machine for video editing.  Once I updated my OS to Sonoma 14.6.1 and Adobe Premiere to 24.6.1, I began having issues with importing video files.  When I import a .MTS (AVCHD) video in Premiere Pro, there is an audio drift of approximately 20 seconds.

I did not have any issues when the OS was Ventura 13.6 or an older version of Sonoma and Abobe Premiere was 24.2.1.

I am not sure what the issue is at this point.

For now, use either the beta version 25.2 or downgrade to 23.6.8 to fix sync issues.

quote

Installing AC-3 manually (<https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/dolby_ac_3ac_4_installer.html>) brings audio back in Premiere Pro (v25.0.0, Build 61 and v25.1.0, Build 73) but reproducible out of lip-sync.

Hi @noahahaa,

Did @Gioia5E80 solution work for you? If not, have you tried transcoding these files to ProRes LT or similar?

I hope the team or community can help you soon. Sorry for the problem.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello @noahahaa,

The team has reproduced this issue and is working on a fix. At this time, you can transcode the footage or roll back to the previous version. Let us know if you need help with that.

Sorry for the frustration.

Hi,

Please provide the developers with more information. See, How do I write a bug report?

There is a bug with AVCHD footage in 24.x. Try to roll back a version or transcode your media to ProRes. I hope the advice helps.

Hi @RoyZ_Phoenix,

Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums!  We’re happy you’ve reached out.

We’ll need a bit more information to try to help with your issue. Can you provide more information on the clip format? Also, I just want to confirm that the project, timeline, and clip are all in the same framerate.

Did this issue just begin in 25.1 or was it also present in 25.0?

Please see: How do I write a bug report?

I hope we can help you soon.

Hi, Exactly the same for me using a Panasonic with MTS files. Adobe doesn't
seem to care as I reported it a month ago and saw that many others had
already lodged complaints.

godspeed.

Nathan,

Which version/build of Premiere? As without that information, your post is pretty useless. In an earlier build, it was a problem for a number of users. In the newest, it should be fixed for most.

So if this is with an earlier build, it's not a big deal as it's expected. With the newest build, it would be useful information as that would not be expected.

I am restating my problem here.  It was originally brought up as "Legacy user needs help ..." and am reposting with more data here.
I am using Pr 2025 (2025.1.0) on Windows 11:
  • Processor AMD Ryzen 5 8600G w/ Radeon 760M Graphics 4.35 GHz
Installed RAM 64.0 GB (61.7 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display
  • Edition Windows 11 Pro
    Version 23H2
    Installed on ‎10/‎18/‎2024
    OS build 22631.4602
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1055.0

I have three 20 minute clips from a simple, single take, archive recording of a play.  I copied the files from my Canon XA15's SD chip to a hard drive.  When I play the clips in Media Player, the sound is correct on all three clips.  When I import (or drag and drop) the three clips to Pr, all clips are a bit out of sync (audio/video), but I suspect it's the working files that need to be rendered within Premiere.  HOWEVER, Clip 1 (20:00:30 long) has an issue when I play it on the Timeline or in the Monitor. At the 18:22 mark, the sound from the beginning of the clip replaces the originally recorded sound.  From that point on in the clip, the video continues correctly, but the sound starts over again from the very beginning of clip. The timeline plays through the transition to the next clip with no glitches and the sound seems to be ok throughout each of the other two clips.

I extracted the audio in Pr from Clip 1 and imported it to Audition and the glitch is heard there, too.  To check that the disk drive version of the clip has not been corrupted, I can play it perfectly to the end on Media Player. I have also confirmed the health of the original clip by importing the disk drive version into Audition; no glitch is present.  To repeat, the other two clips of similar length (Clip2: 20:00:30, same length as Clip 1,  Clip 3: 19:08:00, slightly shorter) do not show any signs of this behavior.  I have also rendered the audio (Sequence>Render Audio) in Pr .  As expected the Timeline changed from Yellow to Green across the entire project as it should, synchronization of audio/video looks good, but the sound is still incorrect at the end of Clip 1.  So far there has been no processing within Pr.

What could be going wrong and how can I fix it?

Thank you Rach, Sumeet, & Ann, for jumping on this.  I'm not sure the best way to get you the info on the video clip. Here's what I got from the Properties of the original file:

RoyZ_Phoenix_0-1735596448327.png

I tried highlighting the clip in the timeline and clicking on Clip>Source Settings..., but nothing comes up.  I'm not sure I know how to get this function to tell me anything.

In the camera, the movie format is identified as AVCHD. Recording mode is 28Mbps (59.94P).

In the Monitor Panel, right-clicking in the Monitor and selecting Media File Properties gives:

File Path: F:\WmShakespeareChristmasCarol\WSCC Source Video\ActTwo\00157.MTS
Type: MPEG Movie
File Size: 3.89 GB
Image Size: 1920 x 1080
Frame Rate: 59.94
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - Compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
Total Duration: 00:20:00:30
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0
Alpha: None
Color Space: Rec. 709
Color Space Override: Off
Input LUT: None
Video Codec Type: AVCHD H.264 4:2:0

All three clips were shot in one take, so camera stops.

Here is what Pr says the Sequence Properties are:

Sequence 02
1920 x 1080
00;40;03;12, 59.94 fps
48000 Hz - Stereo
Working Color Space: Rec. 709

I don't know why the length is twice the clip length since there is only the Clip 1 in the sequence I am pulling data from.  I clicked and dragged the files from the hard drive to the Project Bin to create Sequence 02.  Premiere selected these properties based on the files I pulled in.  I did not purposly make any changes to settings.  I do not know how to get the specific info you are asking for such as "XAVC-I 4:2:2 10-bit".  I can send you a 1-min cut from the file that includes the glitch if that will help, but I'm worried that might change something.  I'm sure you don't want the 20-min clip.  Can I pass it to you some other way?

Is there somewhere else you would like me to probe?

My previous Pr version was something in 2022 or so.  I've been on other tasks for the past couple of years and haven't used Pr for that time.

I think all are set for 59.94 P fps.  The clips are all the same.

I hope this is what you are looking for.

l appreciate the help.

Sorry, Ann.  I couldn't find a Tree View in the version of Mediainfo that Windows installed.  If the data I provided above is insufficient, please provide additional instructions.

All, I'm trying to put the project in Frame.io .  No matter what I do, I think I'll need an email address to send the access address. Is there a DM channel here?

In short, there is a bug in Pr 24/25 that causes A/V clips with Dolby Digital playback out of sync.

The easiest fix for some time has been to install Pr 23.6.8 and edit in that version. The easiest way today if you need to complete the project asap is to install the beta version of Pr 25.2. They say that it is fixed but i have not tried it yet, ill wait for the release verison of 25.2.

Don´t ask me why it takes ages for Adobe to release a bug-fix for this issue...

Thanks, Mitch_98 and Averdahl. I located the Beta, installed it, and imported the troublesome clip into a new project.  It survived!  I was able to render both audio and video.  So I imported the other two clips and set them to render in to out.  I got the following error:

RoyZ_Phoenix_0-1736385340315.png

I don't know exactly what any of it means, but the three files in my project timeline end at 1:1:42:39 -- I don't know why it's working in the stated timecodes.  Ideas?

Another thought I had was that, as Kevin et. al. have pointed out, the native format of the source material (AVCHD) is not a good format at this time.  He has suggested transcoding the source to ProRes LT (I don't know where to start to do that) before importing it.  There are several AVCHD settings available for Editing Mode under Sequence  and here are mine.  I note the Editing Mode in mine is "Custom".

RoyZ_Phoenix_2-1736408418232.png

The source file information is in a post on Dec 30th.  I thought I had read somewhere that the sequence settings were auto  adjusted to the first input file's settings, but I'm probably wrong about that.  What do you suppose would be a good selection to use for these files from the dropdown?  I don't know enough about AVCHD to be able to intelligenly select an option.  I can barely spell it!

In general, going to the beta version seems to have fixed the major destruction of the audio in my first clip.  The other clips seem to have also survived the import process.  I have not tried to export the raw, full sequence yet, perhaps I should.  Any suggestions for a suitable output.  This is a perforomance archive, only the actors AND ME, will be annoyed if it is a "little" out of sync.
