P: Unable to freely move clips and audio around on my timeline. Glitch, bug or setting?

Community Beginner ,
Feb 03, 2025 Feb 03, 2025

If anyone is able to wave a magic wand and help me fix this issue then I would be so very grateful!

I am using Premier pro 25.1 on a windows PC, I opened up my project the other day to start work and I was unable to freely click on a clip and drag the clip about on the timeline with the same thing happening with audio. When I do click on a clip to move or drag it I am presented with the picture I have attached, in my program window.

I have tried everything on nearly every forum page I can find, reset all settings from splash, cleared cache, uninstalled and reinstalled softwear, new project, everything I can think of but I can't find anything anyway with someone with this same fault.

Thank you if anyone can save me!

Same for me. I spent hours fixing it and trying to relearn adobe because I doubted if I have missed out learning something since I was self-taught. After I see some ideas in the community saying its the extra monitor, I switched the adobe premiere pro back to the original screen and it works. It's definitely the extra monitor problem, but now the problem is I have been so used to the big monitor, to edit in the original smaller laptop screen is a chore. I hope they fix this problem because it's making editing even harder.

Hi @Kevin-Monahan

Thanks for your reply. I did update my laptop on Friday evening. I guess it makes sense it's related as the last time I used Premiere Pro with any issues was on Friday afternoon. I'll do the bug report, however, any short-term solutions? I need Premiere for work.

Thanks,

Helena

Hello, I need help as Premiere Pro is misfunctioning. Here's the issue: I'm not able to move any clips around the timeline, neither add new clips on it  (both audio and video). I'm using Premiere Pro 25.1.0 on a Windows 11 Pro. About the system:

- CPU: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900HX 2.20 GHz

- GPU: Intel (R) UHD Graphics

- GPU driver: Intel (R) RapotrLake-S Mobile Graphic Controller

- RAM: 64 GB

- Hard Drive: NVMe PM9A1 NVMe Samsung 2048GB

Regarding the project, it is a multicam project (only 2 tho), but it happens with any other projects too. I can import videos and audios to the project, but I can drag them to the timeline. Nonetheless, I can add them if I use the 'insert' button (the one with the arrow), but I can't then move them around the timeline.

Any solution? I use Premiere Pro for work, so I kind of need to solve it ASAP.

Thank you!

Hi @rahul_5960

Very useful your tip. I unplugged my external screen and Premiere Pro is now working. However, I agree with you that it is quite inconvenient not being able to use an external monitor. Hope it gets fixed soon

I've got the same issue. I use a laptop with an external monitor. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

I've been having a problem with my timeline recently where whenever I go to move any video clip, it automatically jumps to a certain place on my screen and I just can't move audio files, I've tried updating my drivers, computer, and Premiere, as well as deleting my preference (which, for some reason just didn't happen) but none have worked.

Hello.

A user in South Korea has discovered the cause of this issue and suggested a temporary workaround.

Problem reproduction conditions
1.4k display main monitor
2.Display scale setting in Windows (Scale value 150 ~ 200%)
(It looks like a problem when you set the magnification above the default value. It doesn't happen in a resolution FHD environment.)

For more information, please refer to the Korean community post.
We know there are many users with 4k monitors, so we hope this issue is resolved soon.

Also, a Korean user who found the cause suggested a solution by changing the dpi setting. Click URL.

Thank you.

I have this problem with a full hd monitor (not 4k), but I solved scaling the second screen. But now I watch everything so big there.

@Kevin-Monahan Sorry for the long post but being a former software support technician all this information might be useful.

I'm using PremieroPro 2025 (25.1)
My system:

Intel i9 13900k

64Gb of RAM

Nvidia RTX A4000 (Driver 572.16)

2 Tb NVME Drive (2x1Tb Raid0)

What I CAN do:

- Drag a video file from file explorer and place it into the project panel and into the timeline

- Create new sequences and subsequences

- Preview anything on the source monitor and the program monitor

- Add markers anywhere

- Change volumen

- Cut clips

- Extend or shorten any clip in the timeline

- Copy and paste any clip in the timeline (but I can't change the destination layer no matter the combination of track targeting / source patching that I make)

- Delete ripples

- Change any effect (position, scale, rotation, etc.)

And so on

What I CANT do:

- Drag the position of any clip in the timeline (cursor turns into a forbidden icon) nor left to right or into another layer

- Drag from the project panel or source monitor into the timeline (cursor turns into a forbidden icon)

What I've already tried to no avail:

- Check if my project exceds the 24hr limit

- Check Track targeting /source patching

- Resize PP window, and fullscreen mode

- Set audio hardware input to none

- Create a new project

- Create a new sequence

- Reset the workspace

- Delete media cache files

- Reset all preferences

- Reset load cache

- Disable third party add ins

- Uninstall PP

- Clean uninstall PP

- Install an older version (25.0)

- Install an even older version (24.5)

- Install another graphics driver

Firs of all, everything was working fine a few days ago then suddenly on thursday february 30th or maybe friday 31st 2025 the problem arose. I have 3 monitors: one 21" 1080p at 100% scale connected to the graphics cards, one 28" 2160p at 150%scale also connected to the graphics card and a 15.4" 2160p at 250% scale connected to the motherboard. Now my findings.

- PP works fine in whatever monitor is set to the main monitor and doesn't work on the others. It respects the resolution and scale set on the main monitor.

- PP works fine in all monitors if all of them have the same scale (100%, 150%, 175%, doesn't matter as long as it's the same scale for all of them)

- PP works fine in all monitors if I change the high DPI settings to "Override high DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by: Application". For me this is not a real option since the scale remains the same accross monitors and I need it to be able to scale accordingly to the size/resolution/scale combination that I have for my monitors (as it did before)

I did some testings for these results like disconnecting the monitors, check the cables, tried multiple combinations of resolutions and scalings, check recently installed programs / peripherals, but everything seems normal.

And finally,  problem solved (kind of...)  I already tried it and worked but it shouldn't happened in the first place.

Known Issue - Windows 11 Update KB5050094 Prevents Moving Clips and Dragging in Premiere Pro

# To uninstall the update:

1. Go to settings > Windows Update
2. Go to 'Update history'
3. Scroll down to the bottom to find 'Uninstall updates'
4. Locate update KB5050094 in the list and uninstall it. Your computer will need to be restarted once the process is complete.

So basically a Windows update messed the High DPI awareness of Premiere Pro

Error when moving a video from the Project Panel to the timeline, and when you manage to do it, a prohibited symbol appears, preventing you from doing anything.

[Edited by mod: library = Project Panel.]

I think you need to reset Preferences as the Selection tool should show an arrow and not a prohibited symbol to begin with.

Hi BERNARDO26652738i3hg,

We're sorry to hear about this. We're investigating a similar issue. Could you please confirm the exact version of Windows you are using & whether you are using a multi-monitor setup?

Thanks,

Sumeet

Hi @Adnisaismx,

Really appreciate you reaching out, my friend. Great list of info, which is well appreciated. Genius. Your post is now merged into the proper bug report that the team is focused on. There are currently a couple of decent workarounds here. Let me know if you find one that works for you until the team can fix the issues. Thank you so much for your patience!

Hi, did you find any solution to this issue? I've started experiencing the same. I'm not seeing any lag but the clips are offset from the position of the cursor and this is only happening on the extended monitor not the laptop

I am completely stumped here. Premiere Pro was working fine until yesterday (2/5/2025). I found myself unable to do any editing, even though I have not changed any settings. I cannot drag imported clips to a sequence timeline. I can use the Insert command instead, but once the clip is on the timeline, I cannot move it. See video for a demonstration:

I have tried the following and none has worked:

  • Restarting Premiere Pro
  • Restarting my PC
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling Premiere Pro
  • Trying different Sequence settings
  • Trying different video source clips
  • Resetting the Workspace to a saved layout

My system settings are unchanged; no new software installed or anything like that. Windows 11, Intel i7-12700H CPU, 64GB RAM, RTX 3050 GPU

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am baffled here, and Pr is essentially broken for me. Any help would be much appreciated!

If using two monitors, does it work OK with a single monitor?

If so, it may be a bug that is being addressed.

It doesn't seem to make a difference. I have multiple monitors but it doesn't work regardless of whether it's in one monitor or I have panels in others.

Try resetting the preferences:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-premiere-pro/td-p/...

If that doesn’t work, try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. If NVIDIA, do a clean installation of the latest Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver).

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

I tried this twice, and also cleared the media cache, reset the plugin loading cache, and disabled third-party plugins. It did not resolve the problem, and I'm still having the same issues.

Update: the Pr community on Reddit reports this is a known issue caused by a Windows 11 update. I'm uninstalling the update and rebooting to see if that fixes it.

Hi Kevin, it looks like Adobe is on top of this. A Redditor suggested I uninstall several Windows 11 updates that posted within the past week. I did so and rebooted / restarted Pr, but same problem. However, I now have a workaround - if I disconnect all external displays, Pr functions normally on my laptop. Not ideal but I can work with that until Adobe / Microsoft find a solution. Thanks for your work on this!

Saludos.
