P: Unable to freely move clips and audio around on my timeline. Glitch, bug or setting?

If anyone is able to wave a magic wand and help me fix this issue then I would be so very grateful!

I am using Premier pro 25.1 on a windows PC, I opened up my project the other day to start work and I was unable to freely click on a clip and drag the clip about on the timeline with the same thing happening with audio. When I do click on a clip to move or drag it I am presented with the picture I have attached, in my program window.

I have tried everything on nearly every forum page I can find, reset all settings from splash, cleared cache, uninstalled and reinstalled softwear, new project, everything I can think of but I can't find anything anyway with someone with this same fault.

Thank you if anyone can save me!

I have a multi-monitor set up on Windows 11 with Premiere Pro 2025.  My main workspace has several panels undocked (Project, Effects, History, Info) on one screen and the main window (Timeline, Monitors, etc) on the other.  This set up has worked fine up until about two days ago.

Now I am unable to drag and drop any files or bins in the Project panel when the panel is undocked on the second screen.  If I move the panel on to the same screen as the main window (either undocked or docked), I can drag and drop in the Project panel as normal.  If I then move the panel back to the other monitor, drag and drop no longer functions.

This issue only seems to affect the Project panel when undocked on a second monitor, and only the items within that panel. Regardless of dock status or position, there are no issues with:

  • Dragging items from Windows Explorer into the Project panel
  • Dragging items from the Project panel to the timeline

I've tried resetting the preferences, resetting the workspace, and switching to a pre-set workspace then back to my undocked layout.  None of these have had any effect.

Any thoughts from Adobe or others would be great.

I have an issue regarding working on a sequence when the timeline is re-located to my secondary display. For reference my main monitor is 4K 120hz, and my secondary display is 1080p 240hz. My main monitor handles everything except my timeline, lumetri, essential sound, properties and effect controls.

I'm not able to add clips, adjust clips, or really anything at all to my timeline.

Normally you could simply click, drag and drop a clip from your bin (in my case, on my main monitor) to the timeline (in my case, down onto my secondary display). From there, continue to make edits. As of a few days ago my timeline just doesn't allow me to edit in any way. When I attempt to drag and clip over onto my timeline, it just doesn't work.

So, needing to finish an edit, I searched the internet and did discover a workaround of sorts. In my case, the issue I'm having is related to my monitors not being set to the same scale inside Windows. My main display is set to 150% and my secondary display is normally set to 100%.

My temporary workaround is just changing my secondary display's scaling to 150%, to match my main display.  Those settings can be found easily by just typing "display settings" into Windows search, then down to Scale & Layout.

Hopefully this is a known issue and Adobe is working on a fix. I'm forced to keep switching back and forth, rendering my secondary display very annoying to use for everything else.

System: WINDOWS 11 PRO

Prozessor Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 MHz, 8 Kern(e), 16 logische(r) Prozessor(en)

Name NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090

Treiberversion 32.0.15.7216

Premiere Pro 25.1.0 (Build 73)

Thanks, even though the elements on the screen have become too small, it still works. I struggled for a week with this.

So, jumping straight into it: Everything worked fine, until a few days ago. Now I can't move a thing to my timeline, or in my timeline, as long as Premiere Pro is open on my external screen.

Now, the BUG is that everything works perfectly fine on my laptop screen, but the second I open the app on my external screen, I experience these bugs. This is horrible as I usually use my external screen as my workspace!

I've tried reinstalling premiere, restarting the pc, checking for updates for drivers etc, nothing works. I've also tried resetting workspace, with no luck. This is a serious issue!

Dragging the clip with the selection tool no longer moves the clip on the timeline. It instead brings up a movement based editing option on the video feed.

No idea which option triggered this effect.

Kind of sound's like a problem I recently had too.

I was trying to move clips in my timeline and it would trigger the same movement based editing option you are getting.

Are you working on just a laptop or using dual montior screens as well? I say this because after resetting preferences and reinstalling Premiere Pro, I realised that I could move clips in my timeline when the window was visible on my laptop screen, but not when it was visible on my montior screens.

The default screen resolution for my monitors is 3840 x 2160, so I changed it to 2560 x 1440 and everything worked fine then.

It seems that there was an windows update / issue only recently and this may have caused the issue.

Hope this helps.

I used to run all my Adobe apps from my external drive; I updated my hard drive and installed them there. However, Premiere does not allow me to drag clips or audio from the Media panel, only when I drag them directly from their folder to the timeline. I cannot do it if I try to move them across the timeline. If I cut one section of either audio or clip and try to move it in the same channel or another, I cannot do that either. I have been attempting V1, A1, and every solution I found, and they do not work. I am stuck with this problem; I cannot create or edit videos. Also, this problem happens with images. I don't encounter the same issue with After Effect. I cannot insert any clip or image into the V1 or audio into the A1.

Why on earth do you put programs  on an external drive?

If you read my post well, I mentioned that I had upgraded my computer drive and reinstalled all Adobe apps. Also, I did not have space in my old drive, so I used an external drive and did not run into any problems.

Not being able to drag to timeline is a matter of not having source patched the tracks.

Not being able to move assets around in the timeline is a known issue.
