Project Window Search Bar

When I click in the project window - top LEFT search bar and then I start typing my keyword to search for an asset, as I am typing the search bar is active for like two characters and then it de activates and every letter I type after that doesn't get typed and activates any keybaord short cut that is associated with any following letter that I am typing.

Why doesn't the search bar stay active until I am done typing?

I have been experiencing this bug for many years, over many versions.  Going back to probably 2015 or 2017?  I've been living with it but it feels like one of those little things that should be fixed by now.
