2019 Premiere Pro having issues with 3D files exported as PNG+Alpha

Have been using a 3D .mov file in After Effects and Premiere for a few months now. No issues. Today I installed the latest 2019 and it does not acknowledge alpha channels. Transparent backgrounds in PNG+Alpha .mov files are now black and can't be removed. I've tried all the options. Reinterpret the video clip, "straight-unmatted" option does nothing.

I've search all afternoon about 4 hours trying to find anyone else having this issue and nothing.

So I reinstalled the 2017 version of Premiere Pro. WORKS!!!! I wish I wouldn't have updated the Creative Suite now. Now I have to revert files to Legacy so I can finish my work.

Just as a test, reinstalled Premiere Pro v.12.1.2 and After Effects v15.1.2. Works like a charm.

BE WARNED when updating to the 2019 versions.

I tested Photoshop & After Effects 2019 after having loaded a project into Premiere 2019.

90% of my project was offline. The project mostly includes .mov files rendered with animation setting & .wav files.

Trying to import them, I get a generic error report.

My 2018 version is working fine. It seems that Premiere 2019 has problems, but After Effects & Photoshop 2019, seem to be working fine, no hassles.

Recommend as well to go back to a version before 2019, until they have fixed this bug.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear this. I understand that you are getting a black background with your alpha channel files in Adobe Premiere Pro.

We're investigating this issue. Until then, you can try this workaround.

FAQ: How to change the Video Renderer in Premiere Pro?

I regret the inconvenience caused.

Thanks,

Shivangi

Apologies but it is not png + alpha, but rather QuickTime with “animation” codec as well as wav files. The media goes offline. Cannot re-link or import files. I get a generic error when doing so.

No need to apologize. I looked at how the video codec from the original producer and it says that it is a PNG+Alpha.

At this point the only solution was to revert to the last 2018 update v12.1.2 and uninstall the 2019. Works just fine. I will not be udpating to 2019 for a very long time if ever.

I agree. We have not ye switch over to 2019 because of this. Until these issues are sorted we are staying put, because it can create a lot of headaches later on. Way to much hassle and time consuming to re-encode to fix this.

Thus sticking to 2018 for now.

Go to this thread ... it's a recognized bug, ProRes 4444 with alpha especially affected. Trent Happel, one of the engineers, talks about a possible workaround until the next release with the fix inculded in this thread right at the top as the "correct" answer.

2019 version doesn't render clips with alpha channels as transparent

Yes, there appears to be a general Alpha channel issue that is being investigated. i cannot comment on expected ETA for the fix, other than it will be as soon as possible.

A possible workaround is to uncheck Maximum Bit Depth. If you go to Sequence Settings, make sure Maximum Bit Depth is unchecked. When you go to Export, also make sure Render at Maximum Depth is unchecked. If both of these options are unchecked, the Alpha channel should work as expected.

If that is not the case for you, please let us know your steps to reproduce and the type of file with Alpha (Photoshop .psd, DNxHD .mov, Targa Sequence, etc.). If possible, it would also be helpful if you could supply us with sample file(s) with Alpha that reproduce the issue.

Thank you!

FYI, the Alpha channel issue should now be addressed in the Premiere Pro 13.0.1 update that was just posted.

I downloaded the update 13.0.1. Now I can't even use dynamic link to import my AE file that was having the issue. Forget it. I'm not using the 2019 version.

I'll stick with 2017 until the developers get their act together.
