Can anyone recommend an FX suite for using when editing 1080 and larger footage? I was using Maxon Universe, but struggled to watch the timeline in real time, without having to render first, even if viewing the playback at half quality.

Sorry for the performance issues on effects. My recommendation would be to transcode the footage to an editing codec (if you have not already done so). You can also try proxies. Having lower overhead on the source footage allows better effects handling. Try it and let me know.
