Computer cuts out randomly when using Premiere

New Here ,
Feb 22, 2022 Feb 22, 2022

For the last 6 months or so my Mac will just completely switch off half way through editing with no error message on boot up. Happens on different projects and could occurr within a few minutes or a few hours. Apple insists there is nothing wrong with my hardware or the computer in general after checking it and multiple phone calls. I've already wiped the disc and reinstalled OS twice, reset P ram, run malware checks and stress tested the GPU but to no avail. I work with other editors and they do not have the problem with the projects so must be something going on my side. Has anyone else encountered this weird issue?

Thanks

Hi Jack22279453f110!

Sorry about that. Could you share the screen recording of the issue? Would you mind creating a new user account and see if that helps? https://9to5mac.com/2019/03/04/create-user-account-mac/

Let us know.

Thanks,

Kartika

Hi Kartika,

Thanks for your quick response. I've since tested it with a separate user and it happened again approximately 1hr in. I filmed a little test on my phone of it crashing whilst multicamming (but it occurs when doing almost anything at any random time). As you can see the computer cuts out and I would then have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to boot up.

Thanks

Jack

Try and use a screen recording program in the horizontal position, showing the entire UI.

Just as an update - I've been using screen recording software non stop, but it never seems to crash whilst its running but as soon as I forget to record it cuts out of course... This is my setup with the activity monitor which I keep constantly running next to it - it never seems to fluctuate much. Crashed twice today without doing anything taxing, just selected a clip on the timeline and that was it.

Thanks

Another week of tests. Weirdly, It NEVER crashes with screen record on - so strange. But without it running it crashes very quickly. Any ideas? Got to the point where I'm keeping screenshot recording just to edit.

Thanks

Jack

Hi there,

Test from today shows a crash within 1 minute of running Premiere V22.2. I have tried earlier versions (15) with the same result.

Please see the recording attached and let me know what can be done. This matter is now becoming urgent.

Thanks

What version of macOS are you using? (I may have missed that info).

Have you tried to turn hardware accelerated playback off?

Is there any chance your iMac is overheating?

Thanks for this,

I'm on a:

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019)

3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB

Premiere Pro 22.0

Have been keeping an eye on the temperature and did a stress test at Apple on the GPU but nothing flagged up with the fans kicking in as they should and no real peaks in the activity monitor. However, doing a software only playback now and so far there hasn't been a crash...
I'm still muddled as to why it never happens during a screen record as well.

Thanks

Thanks for sharing the system details. Could you check if crash reports are saved? https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/faq-where-do-i-find-premiere-pro-crash-logs-...

Yeah I've been using 'fanny' for this purpose, CPU fluctuates between 65-95 degrees C. I've stress tested this too with fans going at full whack but can't recreate the crash anywhere other than in Premiere...

Super sorry about this issue, Jack. This weird shutdown of your iMac does sound like an overheating problem.

Have you tested on other NLE software, like Resolve (Free) or Hitfilm? I read about a case where an editor saw the unexpected shutdown happen in Resolve, too, then took the iMac to the Apple store where a hardware test revealed a faulty GPU. Do you think this is a possibility? This shutdown caused by overheating used to happen with the cylindrical 2013 Mac Pros.

Thanks,
Kevin
