Create title template that transforms footage

Hi all,

We have used FCPX and Motion quite extensively over the past few years to create teaching and training videos, but we're considering moving over to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite for future work, primarily because our operations are increasing and being limited to Apple doesn't look sustainable.

One feature that I can't find anywhere that is very important to us in our work is creating a title template that can transform the footage that it is placed on top of.

For instance, we'd like a title to come in from the right hand side that covers the whole RH side of the frame. As that title comes on, we want the footage that the title is placed on top of to be pushed to the right also, so that the speaker/content stays in view rather than being covered by the slide.

This took about 5 minutes to setup in Motion/FCPX and means that we can control the animation of the title coming in and the footage moving across at the beginning and end of the title by simply dropping in the template. We could also add some custom sliders so that we could adjust the final position of the footage if that was needed for a particular title.

Does anything similar exist for Premiere Pro/After Effects and is it as simple as the Motion/FCPX method?

Thanks in advance,

Joel

I do not believe so. Definitely not within a Title Template

I would create a Sequence that carries Key frames to achieve that "effect" and copy and paste the KFs to other instances.

Thanks shooternz! This is a helpful workaround, but definitely much more complex that our current workflow!

In After Effects, you can link 2 layers in a parent/child relationship, and the child will inherit all the motion of the parent.

So, create your title and animate it, and then link it to your footage, and it will move when the title moves.

Taking the abstraction one level further, you can create a Null object (an empty helper object that doesn't show up on screen) in AE, and then link any number of layers to that single null object, and use it as a master controller for position, scale and/or rotation.

You can also create custom sliders in AE. Look into Expression Controls.

For your purpose, you would create Slider Controls, set a custom value range, and then link the Position properties of the layer(s) to that.

Thanks for your comment. Just to clarify, this would need me to open a portion of footage in After Effects, add the animation and title in there and then relink the final composition back to Premier Pro?

Thanks!

If you create your titles on transparency, then you don't need to take your footage to After Effects, you just need to import and overlay the AE composition above your Premiere video track.

If the animation needs to push the edit out of the way, then yes, you would want to take that portion into AE first and animate it over there.

This is as simple as copying the clip from Premiere, and pasting it directly into an AE compostion.

As far as relinking goes, you can import a live AE composition into Premiere, and it will update any changes you make in AE automatically in Premiere (once you save the file).
