DJI files are just not working on 23.4.0

I have been using PP since I first started editing video.  I have always enjoyed it, but lately every update seems to create bugs that didn't exist in the previous version!  I just spent a day recolouring the whole project because the update changed the way all the luts read.  Ok fine, my state of the art software cost me half a day, that's how used to it happening with PP I am.

Now I have noticed that the this update has caused absolute havoc with all my DJI files (Mavic 3).  Files that were playing perfect now are jumpy or completely frozen in the edit (despite rendering), and then I did a test export and they are exporting like that as well (attached).  It basically seems that if you have any ongoing projects you SHOULD NOT update your premiere pro because you are going to have to redo all your work.

So now what, reinstal the old version so my DJI files work again, but lose all the colour grading AGAIN?!  I am on deadline and do not have the luxury of being able to just redo mountains of work.  I really do not understand why I shouldn't stop using Premiere Pro as soon as this project is delivered to client.

Macbook Pro M2 Max 32gb Ram

OS Ventura 13.4

Files are 4K DJI MOV files HEVC 10 bit 4:2:0 DJI MAVIC 3

I am hugely frustrated and any help would be greatly appreciated?

From the short clip I couldn't see a problem on my phone. I'm across country from home at the moment.

They are changing the color management in Premiere and rolling out changes every once in awhile. They are making the underlying system work as a modern color management with user controls but we are getting things a bit piecemeal.

So there are some changes every few patches to learn anew. And frustrating as that can be, it's absolutely necessary to get the new system.

So we would need to know the color space of the clip, any clip color management you've done, and the color space of your sequence, along with the export settings, to help with the color issues.

Hi Tim,

As Neil mentions, it's hard to see an issue with the sample clip you included as it is very short. I will send you a direct message with a link to send us a longer sample.

As for color changes, it would be useful to know what version of Premiere Pro you were on and what version you moved to. There's a good overview of recent changes here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/overview-of-automatic-log-video-detection-in...

Hi Fergus,

Does the clip play back smoothly.  It does not need to be long to see it is not working.  Even after rending the DJI files are useless.  The solution is to transcode it all to ProRes, but this is a really unneccesary complication, especially since on just one previous version of PP this was not an issue.

I have three employees, all on different M series macs, and every single one is now transcoding the files so that we are actually able to deliver to our clients.

Unacceptable!

Hi Tim,

I'm glad to hear back from you. Yes, that short clip plays back smoothly. Would you be able to share a longer clip? Which model of DJI drone are you using?

Regards,

Fergus

Hi Fergus, ok I thought the clip very clearly was not playing back smoothly.  The Drone is a Mavic 3, I added all the file details to the original post.  The issue seems to be resolved on the latest update as I am unable to replicate it now, I will let you know if I run into it again.

I'm having the same exact issue. I've been using my DJI footage for years and now with this update it's a total fail on DJI files. Uneditable. I'm in the middle of a project and I'm going to have to go back to the previous version and probably start over.

Hi Trent,

As you can see from the thread above, I didn't hear back from Tim, so we didn't get to the bottom of the issue he was having. I've reached out to you directly and am eager to figure out what's going on in your case and how to fix it. I'm a product manager at Adobe and one of my areas of responsibility is camera and codec support, so this issue is right up my alley.

Drone files can be challenging to play back, as they are usually highly compressed. However, I'm sure we can get to the bottom of the issue you're having.

Regards,

Fergus

Hi, I've encountered a similar problem where my DJI Mini 4 Pro footage won't even preview on Premiere on my laptop (MacBook Pro M2, 16GB of RAM). It's stuck on a black screen. It's strange because on another Windows PC (Intel i7, 32GB of RAM), the footage worked smoothly.

Then I noticed that re-importing the same clips into the project worked for me until I associated them with the existing proxy files. After disconnecting the Mini 4 files from their proxies, everything worked as usual for me.

Hope that helps!

Dave
