I had a dynamic link to an AE project which now just shows this image. This is not what I was seeing previously.

Hey Oliver, Welocme to Adobe Community.
When you open AE project in Premiere Pro this error is shown right?
Is that both project are open in both AE and PR?
when you open same project in AE is that your media shown properly?
Try this:
1.Clear PR Preference > create new project and import AE project with composition that you want.
2. Go to Project Setting and change rendering mode to "Software Only".
3. If you install both application fresh then Restart once to enable dynamic links properly.
let us know.
Thanks,
Suraj.

I opened the AE project and realised it was missing an asset.
I fixed it in AE but the change hasn't updated in Premiere Pro even though I closed and reopened the project.

I'm a great believer in workarounds. Render your AE comp and import to Premiere and place directly above the AE comp in the timeline. I think you can also import the AE comp and replace in the timeline. but I've never done this...

Could you explain why "Software only" rendering would help here?

Some time depends on the system media fail to load in that case "Software Only" rendering mode might be hepfull.
Save AE project and Try again if not work Restart system.
thanks.
