Editing with proxies separately from the original files

I have about 6TB of files for project that was shot in 6K.

What I would like to do is create very low quality proxies and edit SEPERATELY from my desk hard drive.

So save the proxies ideally on a 512GB flash drive and when the project is done, re-link to the original files for export.

Is this possible or do the proxies HAVE to live next to the original files? I'm assuming this will cause an obvious glitch with the toggle proxies option if theres nothing to toggle to.

There is an 'old' process of online/offline work. If the files have identical names, you can edit with the 'proxy' files, then select all/Offline. Then relink them to the original full sized files.

Hmm. But with R3D files, the file is actually several files for one clip so not sure if that would work with this situation.

Actually haven't tried that with spanned clips ... and yea, that's a rip when the manufacturer's stick is with those things.

@Warren Heaton  ... you got any ideas here?

Hi Omar:

As there's no way to media manage a project that uses Proxy clips directly to an instance of the project that uses the corresponding Full Resolution clips, we want to avoid editng Proxy files directly.  It should always be the Full Resoultion clips in the project with attached Proxy clips.

This should work, but I have not tested it:

  • Set the 512GB USB3 Flash Drive as the destination when you create proxies and then keep that connected while you're working on your primary workstation.
  • Whenever you want to move the 512GB USB Flash Drive to another machine, use File > Save As... > to save the current project to the USB Flash Drive.
  • Be sure to use a consistent naming convetion to iterate your project files, like "madmax_001.prproj" then "madmax_002.prproj".
  • When you're ready to move back to your main workstation, open the current project file from the USB3 Flash Stroage and use File > Save As... > again to move the current project back to local storage.

Test this with about ten or so clips to make sure it works.

I've done something similar where I put the folder with all of the Proxy clips in the same folder as the Premiere Pro project file and then copied just the Proxies and project to a USB3 Flash Drive to continue working on a 2015 11-inch MacBook Air.  As long as whatever approach you take doesn't break the attachment, you should be fine.  Premiere Pro knows that the Full Resolution clips may go offline.
