The default proxy presets are designed for horizontal video and may squish, stretch, or squeeze your clips that were filmed on a mobile device! First, we'll make an encoding preset (AKA export preset) to choose our settings, then create an ingest preset (AKA import preset) to create the proxies.

If you want to use the preset files we made instead, scroll to the bottom of this post!

Here are the steps written out, if that's easier to follow!

First, we'll make an encoding preset, also known as an export preset.

  1.  Switch to Export mode.
  2.  Choose QuickTime format and ProRes 422 Proxy preset.
  3. Select More Presets if you don't see it. Search "proxy" to find Apple ProRes 422 Proxy preset.
  4.  Now we'll downsize the video! Untwirl the Video section of export mode.
  5.  Uncheck the box next to Frame Size and set it to a vertical aspect ratio (720x1280).
  6.  Select the ... menu next to Presets to save your custom encoding preset.

Next, we'll make an ingest preset, also known as an import preset.

  1. Open Media Encoder.
  2.  Select the + icon in the bottom left to create an ingest preset.
  3.  Name it something easy to remember.
  4.  Check the box next to Transcode.
  5.  Choose the destination where you want your proxies saved.
  6.  Open the preset menu and scroll up.
  7.  Choose the encoding preset you just made!

Now we can apply the proxy presets to the clips in your project.

  1.  Go back to Premiere.
  2.  Right-click your footage in the project panel to select Proxy > Create Proxies.
  3.  Select Add Ingest Preset.
  4.  Search for your ingest preset – it's an .epr file.
  5.  Choose where you want your proxies saved, then click OK.

Media Encoder will create proxies for you. Jump back to Premiere and select the proxy icon from the button toolbar to enable the proxies!

We made some proxy presets that are free to use! There are two .EPR files in this Creative Cloud folder – one for import and one for export. They create 720x1280 proxies.

Hi, Im following along with the video but in my version (v22.1.1) there is not preset menu to get the premade preset from. Is there any work arounds to importing the premade preset into an ingest preset maker?

Just a thought this shouldn't be an 18 step process involving two separate apps.
