How to create a scrolling picture-in-picture?

Contributor ,

I know how to scale a clip and move it around to create a normal picture-in-picture, but I need something a little different. I've created an instructional video that's demonstrating written instructions. I'd like the instructions to scroll in a small window in the corner of the main video. The instructions are just a jpeg that I'd like to be longer/taller than the height of the inset window so I can scroll them just by animating the Y parameter. Any tips?

If I understand what you are trying to achieve ...

Put the jpeg in your sequence (full frame). Now animate the scroll you want and timing using position (Y) keyframes.

Now 'Nest' that layer (right click the clip and select 'nest')

In your main comp you can now resize the nested layer and place it as a picture-in-picture wherever you want while it retains the scroll.

That hopefully will get what you want.

Put the images full screen on a timeline next to each other.

Adjust the duration of each image to your liking.

Add the Wipe or Push transition between them.

Adjust direction.

Nest.

Add to main timeline and scale down.

While waiting for tips, I came up with the idea of placing the scrolling video on a track beneath the main one and using a mask to let it show through. That seems to work.

Waiting for tips???

You got 2 which you did not respond to.

We took time to help you out, and we do this on our own time.

Quite lame.

Thanks, I am out.

My original post requested tips for solving my problem.  Not knowing when or if I would receive any, I continued to try to solve it myself.  I succeeded before I received any replies.  I just now had time to post the solution.

I'm grateful for you trying to help, but I don't understand your apparent bitterness at my solving the problem on my own.

Solving it by yourself is fine.

But being totally ignored (both Steve and me) just p...... me off.

You're right that I should have thanked you and Steve first.  Sorry about that.

Appreciate the thanks. Sometimes people don't respond to replies.

Your solution works well and it has an advantage over my solution in that you can create the scroll within the one sequence rather than jumping between the main comp and a nest.
