How to darken a video without losing sharpness

Hey guys,
I'm a noob to both Premiere Pro and this forum so I wasn't sure where to post this.
I purchased a website template and wanted to duplicate the video effect they used in the demo.
It's the Sirius responsive coming soon template on themeforest.net (the video version).
The video is darkened but still crisp and clean. I've tried to do this with an overlay but it seems to lose sharpness.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I haven't seen that but not sure what kind of overlay you're using. Or why you're losing sharpness with it.

So I guess telling us exactly what overlay you used, and how applied, with probably a screen shot before/after would allow us to help.

An overlay is not the way to "darken" a video.

Levels or Curves  Effects are 2 ways.

Shadow, Blacks controls are 2 other ways in Lumetri. Exposure is another.

All the above are / or can be used with each other and more.

I wouldn't expect brightness to have any effect on sharpness.

I actually managed to get the effect I want by changing the opacity, although whether or not it will look right once uploaded remains to be seen.

Thanks for the tips, though I couldn't quite figure out how to work those tools yet.
