How to get rid of the two black bars when I export the video?

Hi, I used my Samsung S8 horizontally to take the video at UHD Resolution in 16:9 format. This is the first time I'm using my phone to record it. While editing it was looking strange and when I tried to export it shows the 2 black bars on the sides. Do you know what might have caused it? I used Adobe Premier Pro as I do every time and positioned and scaled it. Attached are the screenshots. Please let me know.

Your sequence settings are set incorrect.

2048x1662 is not udh.

They should read the same as the footage: 3840x2160.

Go into the squence settings and correct that.

Yes. Premiere Pro will recreate those files when needed.

Look at the Source information on the last image ... that's not the same size as the image set on the phone! And is a 4:3 aspect ratio.

So ... how did you create that sequence? And what does Premiere show for framesize metadata of that clip in the Project panel in List view?

When you drag/drop a clip to a blank timeline or clicking a clip in the Project panel/bin and selecting 'new sequence from clip' will automatically get a sequence selected for the framesize/rate and audio tracks of the clip.

Thanks. I just dragged and dropped the clips onto the timeline to create a sequence. I didn't create a new sequence from the clip. I'll first try what Ann Bens suggested and move from there. When I made the changes she suggested and clicked on "Ok" I got the message as I mentioned in my response to her comment. I'm waiting for her to let me know and proceed accordingly.

You are trying to change the preview setting, but that is not what i said.

You need to change the sequence settings.

Yeah, I thought I need to change both. So, I only change the Frame Size and not the preview...got it. What about the "Pixel aspect ratio" and "working color space"? Not to be changed and to be at Square pixels option and Rec 709?

Lastly, the "Codec" to be used in the Preview section to be selected as "Apple ProRes 422HQ" even though I'm using Samsung S8?

Apologize for all the basic questions as I'm a newbie and trying to learn here and do the right thing keeping the UHD resolution I have selected on my phone.

Just the sequence setting, can leave the rest the same. (Sorry it does give you that message).

Preview has nothing to do the Samsung. It is the preview setting for playback on the timeline.

I clicked ok and now it shows up even stranger now. What else do I need to fix here? Now it shows a black area all around the video.

Do I need to do this in the sequence panel or in the export panel? If in the sequence panel then do I need to do this for every clip? Why is this happening in the first place? What is that I should have done either at the time of recording or during editing to not run into this issue?

ConstantLearner,

You're asking good questions. But it is hard to answer them fully without more information. For example, you may have "scaled" all or some of the clips when you put them into the (incorrectly sized sequence). If you change the sequence to be correct, that requires correction of the scaling to work.

You could have avoided the problems I see by creating the sequence from the clips to begin with.

And we have all been there at various points. Should I start editing a project over entirely? Or try to fix what I have?

I would do 2 things now:

First, look at each of your source clips in the PR Project Panel. Are they all, in fact, the same frame size, pixel aspect ratio (par), and framerate? The "par" is in parenthesis after the frame size. The sequence you had shows a framerate of 29.97 progressive. Is 29.97p what every clip shows? If any of them are different, then you need to address that.

Second, I would drag one of the clips to the "new" icon in the Project Panel to create a new, matching sequence - as described by others. You can add more clips or not. Do they look correct there? If you can't correct the old sequence, this is how you'd start a new, correct sequence.

All that has been covered in this tread is basic stuff.

Premiere Pro is not for beginners. It has a high learning curve.

The program is targeted toward professionals and advanced hobbyists.

You are missing the fundamentals of video editing (camera basics and how it all fits together with editing software)

You might want to hit the LEARN tab.
