I desperately need help.
I'm working on a project with Premiere 2024 on my Macbook M1 Pro running Sonoma 14.1.2. Some of the used files where BRAW files and everything was OK so far. I was able to work and color grade my BRAW files with lumetri.
Then I was trying to open two projects with BRAW files at the same time and that's where Premiere was giving me error messages. Premiere then offered me to deactivate the Blackmagic Raw filter, and I pressed OK. I assumed I could re-activate the filter later and do some quick changes without BRAW for a few minutes.
Now, when I open my file I get a message (in my German version), which translated means: "Videofilter is missing: Blackmagic Raw". I am able to see my raw files within the project, but they look completely different now, like very flat log-footage. I have looked everywhere in Premiere, in forums and in my system, but I can't find any way to reactivate this plugin/filter.
So what I tried next to reinstall Blackmagic Raw in the newest version 3.6.1. No change. I deinstalled and reinstalled. Restarted my Macbook several times, no change.
I'm quite desperate, because I need to deliver this project. Any help out there?
Hello,
Sorry I'm a bit late on this message I didn't see it before ..
I imagine you found a solution ? Otherwise for others which could come to the same issue, you can try to switch your project to BRAW Studio (FREE) which is a third party plugin which can also imports BRAW files into Premiere Pro, After Effects and Media Encoder. Switching your project by converting it with our special tool should fix the problem. Here is an article which explains how to convert your project from the BMD Plugin
You can only use third party plugins, for BRAW. Adobe does not provide 'native' support.
Your choices are the BlackMagic freebie you apparently were using (with its continual problems), the Autokroma freebie, or the Autokroma paid version. As the paid Autokroma plugin is an excellent tool with several advancements over the freebie ones, I was happy to pay the small fee.
My recommendation is to use the free Autokroma plugin, instead the lousy BlackMagic one. Autokroma's stuff actually works ...

Have you tried updating to Blackmagic RAW 2.1? That's the version that is compatible with Apple Silicon.

Also note that the Premium license is not necessary and the BRAW Studio FREE version should give you the same FREE features the Blackmagic RAW plugin has (+ some fix and improvements). More info on Premium VS FREE here: https://www.autokroma.com/blog/BRAW-Studio-FREE-vs-Premium

Thank you Nicolas.
I had already found out about BRAW Studio and it sounds fantastic. I just was reluctant to make the change during a running project so I waited for help from the forum. None came.
So my quick fix was to grade my BRAW in Davinci, render it out and import it into Premiere to make minor adjustments there.
As the Blackmagic plugin was causing crashes and problems, I will switch to the ful version of BRAW Studio for my next project. Can't wait to use it.
Thanks Nicolas!

This happened to me as well.
Here are my specs:
Apple Macbook M3 Max
Sonoma 14.3
Premiere Pro 2024 version 24.6.1 (Build 2)
Blackmagic RAW 4.2
Footage is BRAW shot on Blackmagic Pocket 4K
Initially, my Premiere project crashed. Upon restart, Premiere prompted a message that said the project crashed due to the Blackmagic RAW plug-in and gave me the option to launch the project with the plug-in disabled. I clicked disable.
Now, I am completely unable to re-enable the plug-in.
This is how it appears in my source window: "Filter Offline (Blackmagic RAW)"
I attempted to re-enable the plugin by navigating to the following "Manage Video Effects" section:
However, as you can see the plug-in doesn't even appear in the Video Effects Manager:
Here are the steps I've taken for Troubleshooting
• Uninstalled Premiere
• Uninstalled Black Magic Raw
• Re-installed Premiere
• Re-installed Black Magic Raw.
• Deleted Media Cache
• Deleted Media Cache Files
• Reset plugin loading cache
• Reset app preferences
• Restarted Computer
• Restarted Computer with PRAM Reset
• Opened other project files containing BRAW files (Same problem)
I am not interested in any Third Party plug-ins as an alternative to BlackMagic RAW.
It was working well before this one crash. There has to be a way to re-enable the plug-in.
Adobe, please weigh in on this, thank you.

I too am having this same issue. I made the mistake of paying over $80 for the third party plugin that keeps getting heavily pushed in every forum I search. After installing it and following all directions, including removing Blackmagic's plugin, Premiere constantly crashed just from selecting footage in the Project panel. Wasn't even "using" the plug in and in probably 20 seconds of opening the projects I'd get a error and the application would shut down.. I had to completely remove it.
I just want to to REACTIVATE Blackmagic RAW. That's all. Everything was fine until one issue and now I can't turn it back on. I am on a Mac Studio Max M1.

Have you checked with Autokroma? They have provided better assistance on their site (and even here) for the BlackMagic plug-in than BM does.
I've twice had minor issues, which their help resolved within a day.
And ... I'm wondering if the crashing isn't a cache problem anyway. So close Premiere, relaunch holding the Shift key down, dump all cache files. See if that helps.
Also ... is this in all projects, or only that one?

I understand and I looked through all of this before replying. To have these kind of problems immediately after paying $80+ dollars for something is not at all a good first impression.
For some context, I have been using Blackmagic cameras with Premiere since 2012. I was an early adopter of Blackmagic RAW, so I've not really needed any assistance until now when I had to disable the plugin because of a Media Encoder error. That's pretty much it. So whether they have more assistance than Blackmagic, again something I keep seeing in these forums, that doesn't matter to me. The plugin should just work "right out the box" for that amount of money compared to a free plugin.
I have done everything, reset cache, deleted files and started fresh, uninstalled, reinstalled, reset preferences. I even opened up older files to get the same issue. I unsinstall BRAW Studio, Premiere works fine.
I just want to bring the OG filter back online. That's all I need.

I've made it pretty clear what help I'm looking for here in the Adobe forum. I just want to know how to turn the original plugin back on. I don't need Autokroma constantly pushed on me. They already have my money and I personally don't like how the application behaves. All of a sudden I have this app popping up and all these windows opening when all I want is the basic tab in Premiore that I had with the OG plugin. I regret spending the $80.
If anyone finds out how to turn that plugin back on or make it "online" I'll be grateful. I know it still works because it's working fine on my MacBook Air. I need it turned on with my Mac Studio Max.

Hello @Frank B. McCright IV ,
I'm sad to see you had a bad experience with BRAW Studio. We don't reproduce such crashs while using the BRAW Studio importer or the BRAW Studio Panel. Did you make sure the Blackmagic RAW Plugin AND BRAW Studio were not installed at the same time (that could involve crashes and would explain your behavior). Also did you update BRAW Studio to the latest version online ? Did you also convert your initial project using the Blackmagic RAW Plugin to BRAW Studio, Using our "Conversion Tool" during your tests with BRAW Studio ?
Note that there is a completely Free BRAW Studio version, which doesn't use the panel but only the "Source Settings" in Premiere Pro, exactly like the Blackmagic RAW plugin does. Premium paid version offers more features and confortable ways to edit BRAW Settings in Premiere Pro and After Effects, or directly in the BRAW Studio Desktop Application.
We have a special tool (Free also) to convert Project back and forth between BRAW Studio and the Blackmagic RAW Plugin in our Panel (Toolbox Tab).
> The plugin should just work "right out the box" for that amount of money compared to a free plugin.
I agree with you, and it does for almost every users of BRAW Studio. Just some have sometimes special configs or don't install as it is suggested (by removing the Blackmagic RAW plugin). Others have crash because their GPU drivers are outdated.
Don't hesitate to contact us on our website (autokroma.com) if you have any issue and want our help.
If you want to come back to a "clean" install with the Blackmagic RAW plugin, here are some guidelines :
First : if you have projects which have been saved with BRAW Studio installed, you will need to convert those projects. For that :
- Install BRAW Studio if you uninstalled it.
- Launch PrPro - Open an empty project
- Open the BRAW Studio Panel, go to the Toolbox Tab
- On the "Convert Project from BRAW Studio to BMD" section, convert all the projects you have used (or just saved) with BRAW Studio.
Then,
- uninstall BRAW Studio with our uninstaller (in the downloaded zip, you can find the installer AND the uninstaller).
- Re-install the Blackmagic RAW plugin, latest version available on the Blackmagic Support Page : https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/professional-cameras
Again, If you have any issues don't hesitate to contact us.
Best,
Nicolas from Autokroma

I found the solutiuon to this issue, well for me this worked.
Since I have another computer I sometimes edit on and Blackmagic RAW was working fine in Premiere on it, I narrowed the issue down to the settings - the Preferences.
After trying a few things I went into my Library folder, the hidden one on Mac. For those that don't know, go to your Desktop and press Option and select "Go" in the top menu bar. It should reveal the Library folder.
After looking in Application Support/Adobe and finding nothing, I went into the Preferences folder and found the Preferences for Premiere Pro. I deleted any preferences that populated during and after the crash where I disabled the plug-in. I went as far back as 2024 to be safe since I haven't really changed much of my workspaces.
When I reopened Premiere I did not get the error saying that the filter was not found, but I also did not see the BRAW panel when I selected footage that was in the File. I imported new footage and the Effects Control panel returned.
Now I may have deleted a few other things, but I'm pretty sure it was the .plist files shown here that were causing the issue.
Hope this helps someone.
-Frank

I should probably add a few more details. Another addition to trying to solve this was going back to Blackmagic RAW 2.1-2.3 which are the last versions that say anything about the Premiere Pro plugin. I noticed that none of the newew versions mention it at all.
I think the fix came from reisntalling that older version after uninstalling and resinstalling both the app and plug-ins with complete reset of cache and preferences. However, I think finding and deleting those preferences I mentioned before could be the quick fix without all the other workarounds.

If you have the BM freebie installed, and do not "wipe" it cleanly off the computer and outta Premiere, there will be conflicts with the Autokroma one. That is just gonna happen.
I had so many constant issues with the BM freebie just gave up and got the Autokroma Studio ... which has worked very well for me, only one hiccup ever and that was fixed in a day or so.
I shoot a lot of BRAW, out of a BMPCC4K and an Ursa MiniPro 4.6k G2. And do all my own post with it. LOVE shooting that BRAW ... it's slick for me to work with in Premiere. As easily as in Resolve.

@R Neil Haugen It's annoying when your "solution" is to just use a different program.
I tried Autokroma Studio Free version and it crashed on the first use. So thumbs up.

Not a thing ... and that's a pretty insulting comment to go public with on a forum when you don't know jack about who you're making it about. Nor it seems, what you're talking about. As I've never ever suggested using a different program ... just a different plug-in.
And like many heavy users, I've got a lot of plug-ins, from the full RedGiant Universe through Neat Video, Knights of the Editing Table, Digital Anarchy ... a couple others. It's just part of normal life in the trade.
I've done BRAW work for years now, a ton of BRAW, from different BlackMagic cameras and on four different computers ... two desktops, two laptops. On all, I've tried the BM BRAW plugin. And always had issues within the first couple weeks. Remove/reinstall, works a week ... or two. Remove/reinstall.
BlackMagic provides no support whatever for use of their plugin in Premiere. And note, I'm also a long-time Resolve user. I've enough BM kit that I've got extra Resolve studio licenses in a drawer.
In my many hundreds of hours of experience, the Autokroma plug-in has only had three issues in several years. Once, I needed assistance in upgrading the license stored on that machine, and twice, there was a minor issue that the support people at Autokroma helped with immediately.
As I've oft noted, the only online place to get support for the BlackMagic BRAW plug-in for Premiere ... is the Autokroma website. They have articles on fixing issues with the BM plug-in. Which again, Bm does not provide.
And Autokroma provides a freebie plug-in now also, so you don't need to spend the rather small amount for a paid license.
So what you're complaining about, I haven't a clue. Makes no sense.
