I need help mixing 23.976fps and 25fps footage!

Hi all,

I shot two workshops recently and stupidly shot the both in different frame rates. What makes it a bit tricker is the audio is also recorded to a Zoom H4N not into the camera.

I have already started working on the footage, just selecting the best vox pops and pulling out bits I like, but I am currently working on two sequences at once, one for the 23.976fps footage and one for the 25fps footage.

How on earth do I blend them and keep audio in sync? I'll need to put them both into a sequence but I don't know where to start. I have no preference on export settings, this will be hosted on YouTube most likely.

Please can someone save me here......!

Sam

You will need to experiment using the Time Interpolation options > Frame Blending & Optical Flow.

I suggest you master at 23.98. You usually get better results letting premiere drop frames from the 25 footage rather than forcing it to generate new frames in the 23.98.

You could interpret the footage to a different frame rate both directions but this will massively complicate your audio sync issues so probably not worth it.

Thanks for the answer. So I've reinterpreted my 25fps to 23.98fps. I've sped my audio track up to 107% and maintained pitch and it looks passable. What do you reckon? Does that sound ok?

It does not sound good to me.

The calculation of speed is incorrect, 25 / 23,976 = 1,042709376042709 X 100 = 104,2709376042709.

If you use a CC version, what you would do is include the video of 25 fps in the sequence of 23,976, Premiere has to adjust the video automatically to the sequence without any problem.

Thanks for the response.

So what you're saying is to drop the 25fps in my 23.976fps timeline and it should be ok? What frame rate should I export at? Also will this not put my audio track out of sync?

Thanks

Sam

What you need to know is that you can create a sequence in 23,976, and you can easily add a video of 25 frames per second, and if you create a sequence at 25 frames per second, you can add a video of 23,976 to the sequence.

You must decide at which frame rate to export, it is recommended that it be equal to the sequence, therefore you must determine if it makes a sequence of 23.976 or 25 fps.

If your video is not a "VFR" variable frame rate, you do not have to have audio problems.

Curious: why 23.98 rather than 23.976? Since PR requires you to type in the rate, it is true that you can use either. PR rounds the number to 2 decimals, but it is using the full number. (You can check it in the preview area of the project panel.) Over a 6-7 minute sample, it was different by about 10 frames.

Yes I mean 23.976. I always just call it that - I forget than some folk don't automatically convert that in their brain to 23.976 like I do.
