P: Premiere 25 Playhead laggy with Timeline docked

When pressing play in the timeline, the blue play head usually runs very smoothly from left to right.

Since the new update, the play head is now very laggy and jittery.

Hi @66Samus - Can you make sure in your preferences under audio hardware your default input is set to "No Input".

 In your timeline panel in the hamburger menu can you select undock panel.

Let us know if any of these help your issue?

We can't even guess, without the complete data of at least:

  • OS/CPU/RAM/GPU/GPU driver;
  • the media in use, what is it, created by what;
  • what drive setup is used for project and media files;
  • and what effects are in use.

Give us that and we can help.

That processor is ancient by computer standards. Nearly to dinosaur status, sadly. And yea, that's always painful.

But don't you know what media you're using, and what created it? What format/codec and creating device?

And also, what drives your computer has?

I film with a Canon C100 mkii, always mp4 format. Hopefully this is what you meant?
The graphics driver is version 32.0.15.6070, studio driver, not the game driver version.

Hopefully this info also helps:

The video clips in the timeline still play at full resolution and speed, without any lag. That part has never been an issue.
I'm only talking about the blue playhead itself, so that is why I'm assuming this issue i'm having is unrelated to my cpu or graphics settings, since video itself still plays perfectly like it always has.
The only thing that changed between when the playhead used to run smoothly and now is that I updated Premiere.
But wasn't sure if there was some setting that got changed automatically when it updated.

Thank you again for your help man ❤️

Ok, so playback is fine, it's just the CTI/Playhead, that moves irregularly?

Thank you Jamie! "Undock panel" is exactly what fixed this issue.

Although, it would be nice to still have the panel docked.

Hope this can be experimented with or fixed in the future!

Thank you again ❤️

Hi guys, I don't really understand why when I use two monitors in a workspace that I already made from the scratch, the playhead just jumps like crazy, and sometimes dissapear, why?

When I use just one monitor works perfect, used to happen in version 24 before, and eventually got fixed now in 25 I have the same problem. It's really but really really annoying.

I don't have any problem of performance, what can cause that?

Premiere is happier if the Timeline and Program Monitor panels stay on the same monitor/window as the main program menu. And that is better typically on the computer's "main" monitor.

Never drag the edge of the Premiere window across mulitple monitors, that will cause bad things to happen.

Create new panel groups on secondary monitors, and place whatever you need in them.

I've got nine custom workspaces, most of them using all four monitors, and don't have problems. But then, I do have mult-monitor experience in Premiere for over a decade.

And I've tried to get them to modernize panel "recognition" by the app, so you could simply assign Premiere panels or panel groups to other monitors. Ah well.

You can create other panel gra

This is also happening in Version 25.0.0 with the 'new' Properties panel open.  The timeline plays okay, but the playhead is randomly stuttering, as is the Timecode display (next to the Fit/size) in the program display.  However, timecode in the program overlay plays smoothly.  The playhead stutter is annoying because you can't see where you are on the timeline, as the stuttering actually hangs for several 'beats.'  Close the Properties Panel (and/or the newly renamed Graphics Templates) and the playhead behaves normally.

Jamie...  please re-read my post.  I'm using v. 25.0.0, and with the new Properties panel open and affixed to my workspace (dual monitors), the playhead stutters, even on plain ol' video tracks with no effects. I can close the Properties panel and the stutter goes away.

Pardon my delay; was on the road most of today.  I've attached a screen recording of the playhead stutter in version 25.0.0.  I did accidentally discover that this only seems to occur with dual monitors.  Using Premier Pro on a single monitor --and with the Properties panel-- the playhead and timecode run smoothly.  I do not have a screen capture of that example.  I'm driving the monitors with an NVIDIA GEForce GTX 1660 Ti (yeah, my system is a few years old).  However, if you'll notice on the bottom of the screen capture, there are several displays that reveal the status of the computer, i.e. available memory and GPU usage.  None are over-burdened.

Jamie, Undocking the Timeline did resolve the stuttering in my dual monitor setup.  The playhead and timecode displayed perfectly.

However, I don't want to edit in this "undocked" Timeline bandage.  Nor do I want to close the Properties panel or other panels that might be clashing with the Timeline panel.  I presume, Jamie, that Adobe will be fixing this issue and release it in a subsequent update?
