and a 80GB software scratch disk 300MB/sec read/write
yet playback at 1/4 rez and 25% screen size works, and then it
doesn't, then does, does not, off and on. Render clip does nothing.

What created that media? And what is it?
There's a lot of people that think that 'simple' drone/DSLR mp4/mov H.264 media is 'simple' but in reality it's far harder on a CPU than much of the "pro" camera 10/12-bit 4k/6k stuff. That might be the issue here.

That model only has SATA II drive capability and lousy USB 2 so no real expansion of storage
Where are your Project files and the media files for that project?

Project and Media are on 100MB/sec read/write drives.
The odd thing, everything is fine, and SUDDENLY, just
a motion or scale change gums everything up, even tho
the whole previous 2 hours of editing worked well.
In this case, a computer restart got me running
adequately, but it will gum up again.
AACK first run of the day all frozen.
How do we edit under these circumstance?
And now SUDDENLY it does work.

what else can be done?
But does that explain great performance, and then stalled?
