Premiere Pro CC 2018 Crashing When I Trim Clips

Hi,

I updated to Premiere Pro CC 2018 yesterday, and have since have had multiple problems with the software. Most common, most times I try to "Drag Edge of Clip" (trim) to expand it in the timeline, I automatically get shut down.

My workaround has been to use the Razor tool to cut where I need to, but if I forget, I get shut down again.

Other than my workaround (or any other workarounds) is there a way to fix this so I won't crash as often.

Thanks!

I Just had this issue, Mac sierra (10.12.6)

Premier 12.1.1 (Build 10)

Had it on OpenCL and it crashed every time I tried to drag out a layer.

Changed it to GPU Cuda and its working fine here, so def OpenCL issue as far as I'm concerned.

Resolved

I am having this issue as well, Mac High Sierra (10.13.6)

Premiere Pro CC 12.1.2 (Build 69)

Tried OpenCL, and then Metal, with both it would lock up the mac. Updated to software only and get the spining beach ball for at least 2 mins each time I trim a clip! Just now had a system error "out of memory, force quit the application".

I have a school play that goes for 1.5 hrs with 3 cameras. It has taken me many hours to get 8 mins in!

Has any solution been found for this??? Wes Howell if it is possible to schedule a walk through I would really apprieciate it!!!

Grant.

Update

Thanks for your help, Wes Howell!

We updated my settings to use Metal Renderer, changed the memory setting to use 10gb (of 16), and removed the Warp Stabliser (only to add at the end) and now it seems to be greatly improved.

Thank you for taking the time to check things out for me. Greatly appreciated.

I have been having this problem too.  I am running iStat menus, and noticed that every time it crashes like this, the VRAM is completely filled up.  Bad things happen when you overflow the VRAM.  I think because when you perform a Trim operation Premiere displays the in and out frames, it is not properly clearing/checking to make sure it has enough VRAM to display both these frames.  I am on an iMac pro with a Vega Graphics card with 16GB of VRAM.

This thread contains a few different issues and some are fairly old / possibly resolved,  etc.

With that said, happy to lend a hand.

Are you able to reliably reproduce the crash, share steps and crash reports, etc?

Of course support is available anytime but I'd also be happy to assist.

Thank you Wes,

There aren't any specific steps needed to reproduce it.  It happens when I am working with effects heavy timelines at a high resolution with lots of layers.  I also often have After Effects open in the background as I move back and forth between the two programs.  The crash occurs when I try to adjust the trim and have full VRAM.  It is possibly FxFactory related.  I do some plugin development for them, and use some of their plugins which I know are heavily VRAM dependent.  The layer that I am adjusting when it crashes often doesn't have any effects on it though.  It also sounds like a number of other people are having the same problem here.  I am happy to send crash reports.

Hi Matt,

Please submit crash reports with your email and a short description of the issue. I can look them up that way. Or you can PM them to me directly if you'd like.  (send message in this forum)

I'm assuming the crash is in Premiere, correct and Dynamic Link is not involved?

Found the below solution in a different thread and has fixed this very problem for me:

This is likely being caused in certain sequences due to the the "Composite Preview During Trim" option.

You can try disabling this in the Timeline panel "wrench" menu.

Thank you OriginalMatte,

I was looking for a way to do that in the wrench in the program menu.  Didn't think to try the timeline's wrench.  I'll see if that helps!

I wanted to post an update that OriginalMatte's solution of disabling "Composite Preview During Trim" seems to have fixed the problem for me.  Thank you!  I didn't post the original question, but I think this deserves to be flagged as the correct answer.

Thank you also to Wes who has been in touch with me.  My past experience with bug reporting to Adobe has been sending reports into a black hole, so having a responsive Adobe rep with an interest in fixing the problem is appreciated.
