Premiere Pro CS6

Hi, I have recently bought a new computer, some of the spec include:

Motherboard - 1 x Asus ROG Strix X670E-F Gaming WIFI

Graphics Card - 1 x Nvidia GeForce® RTX 4090 24GB

RAM - 1 x 64GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5 4800MHZ (2 x 32GB)

I have re-installed my Adobe Master Collection CS6 program files. I launched Premiere Pro and tried to open a previously completed sequence/ project file and I got this text appear:

"This project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type."

The files behave perfectly okay on my previous computer (Windows 7; my new computer is Windows 10), so I don't understand what has gone wrong?

I don't want to upgrade my software because later versions require a subscription fee and because I'm only a hobbyist the ongoing fees will be too expensive for me. So can someone please help with my dilemma?

kind regards

I think there were some codecs that Win10 does not install by default. If all the file in your project are the same type, just look at one of them to see what codec it uses. If you're using Windows media player, will it play there?

If you have many file types, create a new project and import the old project, but only one of the sequences.

Hi Ann

Thank you very much for replying. I have followed the steps in the link you have provided. I got to:

Deactivate and reactivate Premiere Pro
Stage 3: Deactivate Premiere Pro. Choose Help > Sign Out. Then, in the Creative Cloud dialog box, click the Sign Out button.

I click on the Help button and within the drop-down menu I can't see any where to sign out? Therefore I can't proceed any further?

Also where can I find the Creative Cloud dialogue box?

Can you help me please.

kind regards

You do not use Creative Cloud as its no longer part of CC.

You need to deactivate and activate Premiere CS6 itself.

Did you deactivate CS6 from your old computer first?

Hi Ann, please forgive my naivety. I didn't deactivate CS6 from my old computer because I didn't know I had to? Also I'm afraid I don't know how to deactivate CS6 and I also don't know what the procedure is required for? Could you enlighten me please.

CS6 used Adobe Application Manager to activate and de-activate software.  Also, back when CS6 was the current version, the Help pulldown menu in Photoshop was the most reliable way to handle registration, activation and de-activation for the entire suite.

Instead of Adobe Creative Cloud DeSktop, look for Adobe Activation Manager or look for Help > Deactivation under the Photoshop Help menu (even though we’re talking about Premiere Pro CS6).

Hi Warren

I'm going round in circles here! I've opened Premiere with and without a file loaded, I've clicked on the Help button in both cases and within the pull-down menu I can see Product Registration..., Deactivate..., Updates... but all three options are greyed?

I can create a new project file, populate it with content, save it and then reopen it without a problem.

It's only when I try and open the project files that were copied from my old windows 7 PC (now no longer accessible) that I get the error message as indicated in my initial post?

Can you give me in as simple to understand terms as possible what to do so I can open these old project files please. I have invested a lot of time creating these files and if it's at all, possible I don't want to loose them.

Kind regards

Hi MotionP:

Re-reading your original post, it sounds like your installation of Premiere Pro CS6 is active but the project file that you are opening uses a video CODEC that is not supported on your newer computer.  Specifically, the system drivers that allowed you to work with the media from the project that you are trying to open are not available.  While de-activating and re-activating Premiere Pro is a troubleshooting step, that will not resolve the issue if it's driver related.  For example, several formats that were supported by the QuickTime framework (deprecated by Apple back in 2013) could be unusable on a different computer running Premiere Pro CS6.

If you use MediaInfo (open source) to view one of the source clips used in the Premiere Pro project file that has the Sequence that cannot be opened, it may be possible to point you in a direction that gets you back to being able to use the Sequence by installing the missing drivers or by reconnecting to transcoded clips.  Post screenshots like the ones shown here.

I'm thinking that if you cannot install the missing drivers you'll want to get past the error message and hopefully open the Sequence with all of the media offline (that is, view the Sequence with the clips not linked).  From there, attempt to reconnect to a modernized version of the source clips.  Shutter Encoder (donation-ware) is the first thing I would try to transcode the original source clips.

This article shows the file path for Adobe Application Manager (AAM): https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/aam-error-update-cc-desktop-app.html.  But again, I'm not sure that's going to resolve your issue.

"This project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type." was a frequente occurring issue in those days on windows. Deactivating and activating the program was the way to go.

OP might need to install Quicktime.

This is required to run Encore.

On a different note... why Windows 10? Windows 11 is much nicer. You're using AMD so it's not as critical as it would be if using Intel, but still... it's been around for almost 2 years now. I'd go back and re-do the OS, since it sounds like you're starting new here. 🙂
