Premiere Pro runs very slow in iMac 2017, playback hangs all the time

I'm editing our company movie in Premiere Pro with 4K footage. I never get a nice playback. I only see frozen images, one after the other... This makes it impossible to work on this project. Even in the source palette the preview of the clips doesn't work at all. The project is running local (on my iMac). What's the problem here? Is my iMac powerful enough?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)

Processor: 4,2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Memory: 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

Video card: Radeon Pro 580 8 GB

Can someone help me out here pls?

Bart

The video preview has always been Quicktime... so i don't think this is the problem.

Thanks for your attempt to help me out here.
