Project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements

Contributor ,

This seems to be a common issue with multiple solutions none seem to work for me but here what happens and what I have tried:

I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro, both running High Sierra and Premiere Pro 12.0.0 (Build 224).

I have a premiere project which I've been working on using my iMac with no issue.

I now try and open the same project on my Macbook Pro and I get this message : "Project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements"

I've then tried about 10 different projects all saved in the latest version of Premiere on my iMac and they all do the same thing.

Also worth nothing I used this Macbook Pro with the same projects about a month ago and they worked fine.

So what I tried:

  1. Logging in and out of Creative Cloud as detailed here - didn't work
  2. Tried starting Premiere holding down the option key to reset the preference - didn't work
  3. Tried starting Premiere holding down the shift-option key to reset the prefs and media cache - didn't work
  4. Created a new account on my Mac, logged into that and openned the project in premiere - worked fine - so underlying installation is ok
  5. Uninstalled Premiere and included option to delete preferences - then re-installed - didn't work
  6. Uninstalled Premiere and included option to delete preferences, then manually removed the main prem preference plist file and removed my profile from ~/documents/adobe/Premiere Pro/12.0 - then restartred my mac and then re-installed - didn't work

I don't want to reinstall High Sierra (too much time) and from (4) it would seem the OS is all good with a clean account.

I also don't want to import my projects into new projects - I have too many projects I need to use and some are huge so I don't want to deal with the issues and time of importing them all.

There must be some fix out there but I can't think what else to try.

And frustratingly I leave today for a month filming and editing overseas where internet is pretty bad so re-installing over the internet is going to become an issue.

Anyone got any ideas?

The continued joy of being a Premiere user!!

OK, found a workaround.

Open Premiere.

Then log out of Creative Cloud

Then open the problem project

It opens fine but you get a warning saying it can't load CCLibrary assets.

Then log back into Creative Cloud

This is the warning:

So at least I can open all my projects now. I'm writing a new bug report to Adobe that explains all of this but would be nice to hear from Adobe at some point and know this is being fixed in the future. Bug reports are just a shout in the void, so you never really know if anyo

This is most often seen when trying to open a project in an older version of PP.  Double-check that.

Got it.

Unfortunately, the only other suggestion I have is Step 4 below.  You may find it a bit extreme, however.

I found out that happens when I changed folder name or moved the folder which has the project contains CC Library contents.

Couldn't find a solution yet.

Thanks Erica, I think you are right. Looking at projects that will open and those that won't, it seems to tie in specifically to projects that use images from my Shared CC library.

So the question is now to reset or relink the CC library elements.

I have logged the original bug with Adobe but annoying lt their black hole of a bug tracking system means there is no way to update a logged bug or even know if anyone at Adobe is paying any attention. I guess I'll log the same bug again and include the info about CC libraries and wait and hear nothing and hope something gets fixed at some point in the future. Oh the joys of being an Adobe user 🙂

Yes. What a joyful Adobe world we are in~

By the way, I looked up the original file and folder location & name in Time Machine. After I restored the EXACT same folder from the Time Machine, I move the project file & CC library folder in the restored folder. And then I could open the project file. Wish you luck!

What's strange here is that once a CC library file is added to a project is now placed in a "CC Libraries Downloads" which is placed along side the project. I have that folder and it has the required assets in it but something else is misaligned in the project file.

What I tried was an older simple project with a single sequence, a few video clips and one CC library image file. This project won't open on this computer or any user account that is logged in to the Creative Cloud app. But if I create a new mac user account, I can open the project fine (as long as I am logged out of the main Creative Cloud app - not sure why it allows me to launch apps without logging into CC but it does). And if I remove the CC library image file from the project and save the project - it will then open in my main user account when logged into Creative Cloud.

I've also tried resetting the CC library files as noted in this help doc:

Solution to the issue: Adobe Creative Cloud Libraries panel doesn't load in desktop products

But it didn't fix the problem.

Also, Adobe just released PP 12.0.1 - my fingers were crossed as its a bug fixed release... but no joy.

This seems like a pretty significate bug. I hope Adobe fix it as the work around require removing all references to CC library assets from older projects on a clean user account which is a nightmare for some of my larger projects.

An update! So a project that was opening fine on my MacBook Pro now won't open, with the same error message, since I upgraded from 12.0.0 to 12.0.1. Thanks Adobe.

This worked. Thank you so much. You may have saved my business.

I have been going back and forth with Adobe support for the last two months trying to resolve this. Multiple critical project files have become unopenable. Weeks worth of work was getting lost because a project file and all of it's intermittent daily saved copies on every single backup drive would get this error all at once, after having worked fine the next day. I was taking every backup precaution that I could think of, but nothing would help.

I had two separate Adobe support reps "help" me. I explained to both of them that I had noticed issues with the CC Libraries Download folder in every affected project. The first rep had me send her the project file, then took two days to send me an XML with a fractured version of a several-weeks-old sequence. The next rep said that we needed to schedule a call. He scheduled and missed three separate appointments before finally calling early for the fourth; when I was in another meeting. I didn't hear back from him until 45 minutes after our appointment time.

He attempted to open the project and told me that it was damaged. When I explained that I had discerned that much from the "project may be damaged" message, he immediately said "oh, then your hard drive is corrupt." When I informed him that this was happening on four separate hard drives, two of which were less than a month old and only ever plugged in for daily backups, he was confused. I then told him about the CC Libraries Download theory. He took a look at the Adobe Stock files in question and said "probably a virus." A statement he retracted when I told him the files were downloaded directly from Adobe Stock. He eventually had me send him the project file alone, without any of the other assets. seconds later, he said "it opens for me. That hard drive is probably corrupt." I reminded him one last time about the four separate hard drives all having the same issue with the same project files simultaneously. He told me he would have to escalate it to yet another team, and I would hear back from them the following day (as I had expressed concern regarding the lack of communication thus far). This entire interaction lasted maybe 20 minutes.

That was two weeks ago. I have heard nothing from any Adobe rep since. Further attempts to get assistance have been ignored. I have multiple client projects coming up as I prepare for a major marketing push and was feeling helpless. So far I got lucky in that the projects that were failing to open had been almost entirely completed, and I was able to work with the last rendered DNxHD in a new project file for any necessary changes. But I was extremely worried about this happening halfway through one of these larger projects for critical clients in the near future. I was actually in the process of looking into switching everything over to Avid or Resolve for safety.

I know this was a long rant, and I apologize if it is not appropriate for this thread. I just wanted to thank this poster for providing an actual workaround that may save my small business over the next couple months, and put my experience out there for anyone else who may be dealing with similar issues.

Also, if anyone knows any better way to get support from Adobe, please let me know.

This is no help for me.

1. I was not saving the project on Creative Cloud.

2. I had no items from CC Libraries in the project.

I see this has helped others, so thanks for the help.
