Random Crashes when editing Red Raw footage or exporting

Community Beginner ,
Jan 14, 2025 Jan 14, 2025

Windows, Premiere 25.1.0 (but has been an issue for a while)

Without fail, Premiere crashes in the middle of a project or during export when working with red raw files.

Sometimes a minute after starting Premiere, sometimes 10, but always happens. Scrubbing, playback, changing setting, anything. Its incredibly frustrating and severely hinders my work.

It also takes me 10 attempts to export, for the same reason. 9/10 it crashes mid export (in ME as well).

I've uninstalled all my plugins, effects, etc and still same issue. I also recently updated my hardware with a clean install, same issue as preupgrade.

Other issue, I cannot use the white balance in the RAW panel with raw clips, crashes premiere.

Previous Hardware:

AMD 5900x

AMD 7900xt

64 GB DDR4 ram

18TB HDD (where project and footage are stored)

1TB NVME (where premiere is installed)

New Hardware

AMD 9950x

64 GB DDR5 Ram

2 TB NVME (where project and footage are stored)

Attached is a sample of my timeline, nothing crazy. Couple text layers, an adjustment layer, clips and, music. Complexity of timeline has no effect on whether I crash or not.

Crash Report is as follows:

Hi @elian89413308 -  Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.

The reports are saying you are crashing through a Virtual Desktop Monitor, which Premiere thinks is a GPU.  Are you using one of these?

Are you using any plugins or third party panels?

Sorry for the frustration.

Yeah, I have that program installed. I'll uninstall and report back.

Where is that stated?

Where did you see the Virtual Desktop Monitor on the crash report?

I uninstalled it, but no luck. Still crashes all the same.

I have Maxon Red Giant installed, but I've uninstalled that before with no progress.

Latest crash report says the same thing, no major difference:

Hi @elian89413308 - There have been some updates for Red footage in Beta.  Can you try installing the beta version 25.2 and let us know if that helps your issue?

Hi @elian89413308 - Can you try removing the Red Giant transition.

@jamieclarke Nope. Actually worse. It crashes with no splash screen or crash report, just crashes to desktop.

I literally can't even hit play in Premiere Beta, it crashes less than a minute after opening a project.

@jamieclarke As for the red giant plugin, the issue happens without Red Giant installed and on projects not using any of their plugins actively (when installed). Just tried to play a timeline without any effects or plugins, and crashed.

Just resent a new crash report.

@jamieclarke I uninstalled Red Giant plugins, I have zero plugins installed, no virtual desktop, and just trying to edit both Canon Raw Lite and Red Raw gives me crashes still. Should I keep pasting crash reports here, I'm not sure even which part is important.

Windows 11, Premiere 25.1.0 but has been an issue for a while and crashes the same in PRemiere 24.

Without fail, Premiere crashes in the middle of a project or during export when working with red raw or canon raw files.

I also recently updated my hardware with a clean install, same issue as pre-upgrade. Ive uninstalled other unrelated apps and programs, no change.

Other issue, I cannot use the white balance in the RAW panel with raw clips, crashes premiere.

Previous Hardware:

AMD 5900x

AMD 7900xt

64 GB DDR4 ram

18TB HDD (where project and footage are stored)

1TB NVME (where premiere is installed)

New Hardware

AMD 9950x

64 GB DDR5 Ram

2 TB NVME (where project and footage are stored)

Complexity of timeline has no effect on whether I crash or not.

I have already posted about this once before, with no resolution. The problem still persists and have latest drivers and just updated to windows 11. Still seeing the issue. I'm pretty much ready to switch to Davinci if this isnt resolved ASAP. I've been a customers with Creative Cloud for years now.

My contact email is: contact@colectivocreative.co as its been listed in the crash reports.

Hi @elian89413308 - Can you email me the project to jamiec@adobe.com that you are crashing with.  Also can you navigate to help menu bar and select system compatibility report and then at the next dialog box select export in the bottom left corner.  Thank You.

Hi, @elian89413308,

Not sure if you’ll see this since it’s an old post, but I wanted to share something that might help. You may already know this by now, but it’s worth mentioning for anyone working with RED RAW.

Premiere Pro can handle R3D footage extremely well — if you follow the correct workflow. One of the most common causes of random crashes comes from editing habits developed on non‑RED cameras such as Z CAM or other mirrorless systems.

With formats like ProRes or XAVC, you can often work in a 6K sequence without much trouble. But with RED RAW (R3D), it’s critical to set your delivery resolution from the start:

  • 16:9 projects → Use a 3840×2160 sequence

  • 2.4:1 projects → Use a 3840×1600 sequence

Then import your R3D clips into that sequence and edit. This approach prevents unnecessary strain on Premiere and greatly reduces the chance of crashes.

If you skip this and simply create a sequence from your original R3D clip, Premiere will default to the native 6K resolution. Working in that high‑res timeline often leads to instability and frequent crashes.

Hope this saves you (and others) some frustration. Good luck!
