relating video to noise

I have a project I'm working on and struggling with one aspect of it.

My video project has an accompanying sound file which is silent with bursts of noise like banging which is sporadic throughout. I want the video to fade from black in response to this. Is there a simple way of doing it or do I have to go through the full audio file to note the times of each audio peak and edit to fit? Any advice on the this would be greatly appreciated.

You could expand the height of the audio track, right-click "display waveforms", and then see the graphical representation of that on the timeline.
