Replace Every Instance of Media in Timeline With Clip in Project Bin?

I have multiple versions of a graphic in my Project Bin, lets call them A, B, and C.

Through out my 30 minute edit, I have used graphic A multiple times.

Now I am doing a new version of the edit where everything is the same, except i want to replace every instance of graphic A in the timeline with graphic B. Instead of a "Replace Media", where I would lose graphic A in the my first edit timeline, i simply want to replace A in my second edit timeline.

Is this possible quickly and easily?

I know the long way is to save individual Project Files for each edit with a different graphic and use the "Replace Media" function, but I am hoping to keep all my timelines in the same project file.

Thanks in advance.

Select one clip, Edit > Select All Matching, and then do the Alt+drop I described earlier.

Select all the clips you want to replace.

Drag the new media from the Project panel and Alt+drop them onto your existing clips.

Note that if you have set in and out points per clip, you might need to revisit those clips to make sure they play as expected.

I have about 30 instances of the clip and may miss one or two, so I was hoping there was a way to do something similar to "Replace Media" but without "overwriting" the old media.

Hi there,

This doesn't keep the in and out point of the previous clip. Is there a way of keeping it and replace them all at once?

Because when I do the drag and drop while pressing alt - it place all the clips from the first frame, instead of maintaining the previous cut points.

Best,

Olalla

@Olalladvp if you hold "shift + alt" it should respect the in point.

Hi Scrozier,

Thank you so much, you just changed my life, and safe me tons of hours of work.

I have a question about replacing multiple clips at once. If I select all the clips I need to replace with the HiRes version of my episode and then clip and drag while pressing Alt + Shift, can I keep the in and out points for all the selected clips? Right now, the in and out points only stay the same for the first clip I select.

Best regards,

Olalla

@Olalladvp  If you need to replace media for an entire timeline and not just a few shots, but want to keep the old timelines around... the steps I would follow.

1. Select final seqeunce:

2. Export seqeunce as project

3. Open new trimmed project

4. Select all media in timeline that needs to be replaced

5. Right click - > Make Offline

6. Click Timeline dropdown (hamburger next to seqeucne name)- > Link Media

7. Link to new versions of clips. (make sure "align timecode" is checked.

8. Import that project/seqeunce into your master project.

 Something along these lines: https://youtu.be/iKdxnvWsBtw?t=735

Alt Replace is best for updating single clips, I don't think its designed for batch replacing things.

@Olalladvp

I would agree, however, that the behavior or not respecfting the in point when doing alt+shift replace on many clips is very strange and counter-intuitive. Hopefully Adobe can take note of this and change/fix that behavior because I can't think of a single reason why you would want to offset the first selecfted clip, and ignore the others.
