Hi,
My project has all of a suddent begun to encounter the issue with 'the importer reported a generic error' after I did the autoupdate to Premiere Pro 2024. This project had been faultless up to now.
I tried an in-app media cache delete and then an in-system media cache delete via explorer (windows). After the in-app delete nothing changed. After the in-system a different set of assets emerged with the same generic error issue to before i deleted the cache. Am i going to need to re-render these files? They're not specific to one format type. They're all MP4 H264 from different sources. I've not moved the assets across drives. It worked last week and now it doesnt work.
Any thoughts or anyone else experiencing this issue after the 2024 update?
Hi.
Progressing my troubleshooting. The suggestions from @Peru Bob didn't seem to make much sense to me but I tried them and no success. Something I realized that was similar to @Britt331415233a1a was that my assets were all stored in a sync'd onedrive folder for access and backup (stored locally and also backed up on onedrive). I moved the assets to a dedicated local drive and it seems to have solved the issue in the main, although there are still a few items that have the same conflict still.

Try resetting the Workspaces:
Reset a workspace
Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.
1. Do one of the following:
• Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
• Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.
from here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/workspaces.html
If that doesn't work, try Preferences > Audio Hardware and set Input to None.
If that doesn’t work, try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. If NVIDIA, do a clean installation of the latest Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver).
If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

I have been having a similar issue. Ever since I upgraded to Ventura 13.5, Premiere Pro gives me this error for almost ALL of my assets I am trying to import. At first I thought it was a Dropbox issue, because I keep some of my assets in Dropbox. But I tried moving all assets to a local drive and also to my desktop, and the error persists. Is this an issue with Adobe?

Hi @Britt331415233a1a & @Matt33064761lmsz,
I read your messages. This sounds like a problem you can have with new versions of applications on macOS. See if these steps help your situaiton: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/premiere-pro-hangs-on-launch-on-macos.html
If not, you can also try the following: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/preferences-folder-read-only-error.html.
Let us know if either of these troubleshooting docs helped, or if you need more assistance. I sure hope we can help.
Thank You,
Kevin

I am wondering what the issue is with it being on a cloud backed up location, whether i be dropbox, onedrive or something else?

Ive got a lot of error "a generic import error" since the update of my premiere to premiere 2024, i have to type in manually mts extension just to resolve the error and the fun part i have to type mts extention clip over 300 video files, plus i have a deadline to finish my editing...arent suppose to be the update improving not backwards..and im sure its the premiere 2024 because when i ran my old premiere 2021 ive got no generic error in my files.
I dont know how to reverse it back to my previous premiere thru creative cloud and now im stuck to use premiere 2021.

Be very careful updating to premiere 2024 specially if you are in a middle of editing with deadline to finish involve, this thing give me headache of generic error, in my case gives me a lot of buggy error..thats why sometimes im not excited if there is new update program release because of stability..good thing i have a backup premiere 2021 i have no error accur unlike premiere 2024 a buggy program..the idea of update is to improve the program not the opposite, giving editor a lot of headache figuring what the heck is goin on with the software compromising editor with deadline edit to finish..bydwy im adobe paid subscription.

I too have just been affected with this issue. I have tried older drivers but the only thing that works is using Adobe 2023. Unfortuntately, I am days in on an edit in 2024!!

I was able to resolve. Close project. Delete all your media cache. I suspect my drive letters changed and screwed things up somehow.

Hi. It doesn`t seem a solution to me if I have to keep moving folders everytime I open the project. I´m doing it for some months know and It is very annoying and time expensive

Okay community, I normally try every trick in the Adobe, Creative Cow and Google book. I renamed folders, then file names individually. To no avail. Before stressing and trying everything else, I decided to re-download Premiere 2023 and open up the last known Premiere 2023 project file.
Everything auto reconnected nicely after 1.5 years. I then saved this into a new project file and opened it up in 2024. "Worked like a treat!" -Tony Stark

I renamed the file(s) in question and they worked fine again. VERY WIERD and SUPER FRUSTRATING. Contact Adobe support for a discounted 1 year as a compensation for a whole day blown in my case.

I have been getting an odd assortment of clips that are having the generic import error and renaming the parent folders of the video file just did the trick. Granted this is going to have to be an ongoing process and I have a strict file-naming system so this does eat at my soul a bit. Please sort this out Adobe and I promise I'll never update again lol.

I'm trying to move a project from PP2023 to PP2024 due to export errors on 2023.
First annoying thing: colours of clips in Timeline changed.
Second and most important:
I get the message:
"Offline material is present in this export and has online proxies attached. Offline material will be encoded using the proxies."
PP doesn't bother to give a list of the offline material.
So, I followed advice elsewhere in the forum and created a Status bin that shows me the offine files. This is a useful video:
How do I find offline media in my Premiere Pro timeline?
On Right click properties the 'Link Media' function is greyed out.
So I have to select Reveal Original. Then Right Click and Link Media.
I try to relink the file to its original path, a folder on my external drive where I have all my Assets. PP does not like this and shows me another error message:
'The importer reprted a generic error.'
So I find the same file on another folder in my external drive where I have created a Packaged version of my project.
This seems to satisfy PP. Everyone needs a change of scenery.
I do this with all the offline files one by one.
I guess if I didn't have the packaged folder I'd need to copy the original files to another folder and relink there.
And that's half of my work day. Thank you Adobe.
My system:
Dell Laptop
32GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU v560.81

Hey Guys, I just opened up the up-to-date Premiere Pro 2024 after not using it for months. I created a new project and tried to import simple 1080p/30 GoPro videos but I can't import anything because I get the 'The importer reported a generic error.' message.
Let me wish the developer who created this uttely uninformative error message to poop a cactus. I can't accept that more than 18 months after the original report it's still an issue...
