Track matte key in Premiere Pro 2022 not working

Community Beginner ,
Nov 24, 2021 Nov 24, 2021

I created a lovely track matte key animation as part of a transition in Adobe Premiere Pro 2021, now that I've updated to 2022 it's stopped working.  Please can you fix this ASAP.

I've had to re-create this in After Effects but it just does not look the same and I can't revert my project back to Premiere Pro 2021 too which is also really annoying.

Found the issue:

Track matte works just fine but cannot handle scaling and different resolutions.

Have to go now. Send you the project later this day.

Interesting. Yes setting matte and footage in a matching pixel format solved it.
Strange when my original project was all matching. Anyhow thanks for the help. Too late for the project I did but next time 🙂

To revert projects back to previously working versions, try this:

1. create a copy of your project file (DO NOT WORK ON THE ORIGINAL PROJECT FILE)

2. right click on it and open with 7zip(you can install it for free)

3. select open archive in 7zip

4. right click the file and click on Edit

5. go to line number 4 and change the last number in the line (version = "x") to = "1"

save the file and open

Now, to avoid this in the future:

Turn off automatic updates from Creative Cloud app.

Never update Premiere Pro when still in the middle of projects.

You can always have 2 or more versions of Premiere Pro, so get

your deadlines done on the working versions and test fresh projects on newer versions.

I'm having a problem with Track Matte Key. When I select the video layer that I want to use as a matte, the graphic completely disappears.

I'm working on a MacMini M1, macOS Monterey in the latest version of Premiere Pro. I've confirmed that all of the assets are the same resolution, and none of them have been scaled. I've also rebooted my computer (multiple times) and uninstalled/reinstalled Premiere. I've also tried working with Rosetta checked and unchecked. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do here but you want to but the track matte on the fill layer and then select the matte layer. Try nesting the glitter layer, looks like it has an alpha channel, not sure if that might confuse things.

Sorry for the lack of specificity. The glitter layer is the fill layer, and the text is the matte. I applied Track Matte Key to the glitter layer and selected the text (video 3) as the matte. That's when the text disappears. I tried nesting the glitter layer and no luck.

That's strange. Just a shot in the dark but try rendering the glitter as a clip without an embedded alpha and using that as your fill

Before I saw this response, I tried an experiment based on the idea that it was the alpha channel causing the issue. I completely removed the glitter layer and tried to use the video as the fill with the text matte. The matte still disappears.

Did you try resetting preferences and deleting cache and render files? Also, you could try creating a brand new project, bring those files in and see if it is still an issue. Do you have a different computer you can open the project on?

I used my coworker's computer with the same files in a new project, and Track Matte Key worked properly.

Having said that, I've discovered something really strange. I was working in comparison view to do some color correction for a different project. When I switched back to the project with track matte, I could see the matte working properly but only in comparison mode. See attached screenshots (the background video is just a placeholder) and let me know if I should hurl my computer off the nearest cliff.

To reset Adobe Premiere Pro preferences to the default settings:

  1. Hold down: Alt/Options on Mac or Alt on (Windows).
  2. Keep holding down the Alt key, and click on the Premiere Pro app icon to open it.
  3. In a few seconds, it asks you “Are you sure you want to reset your preferences?”.Click OK.

It is not enogh resizing it. Don't remember if you put it in a precomp with the right size (100%) and then scale the file in that was enogh. Otherwise Renee it out in the correct format as your project and re apply the effect then it should work. Hope it helps

Resize your clips, nest, and apply the track matte to the nest

The clips sould be the same size as well, if you are using assets that are not the same size as your sequence you may need to nest then as well.

Wow, this is super messed up, that matte tracking fails when the image is scaled in any way.  Srsly, Premiere?

That's a pretty basic set of functions that MUST be able to work together.

Just another trademark counter-productive Premiere workaround.  Can't wait to get of this project so I can go back to AVID, where these annoying bad surprises don't happen - on my dime!  Arghhhh

Secondary issue at end of post.   I can confirm that scaling was my main issue.  Editing a 4K clip on an HD timeline won't track if the clip is scaled down.  So just scale it 100%, adjust your canvas to 50% to see the entire image, do the keying and tracking then scale the clip back down to 50%.  The keyframes stayed in place and it worked fine... except the tracking always seems to stop at about 90% finished and won't go any further.  Working on it.....

I found that changing the stacking order fixed it for me.  In the attached grabs, I'm trying to apply a red tint only to the (alpha'ed) illustration of the woman, against a green background.  With the Track Matte Key effect *below* the Shape parameter, it incorrectly applies the red to the whole frame.  With the Shape parameter *above* the Track Matte Key effect, the red (which I've got dialed in at about 95% opacity) correctly tints the woman, and not the bg.
