Somehow I must have clicked something or did something by accident, but I ended up with this dark vertical band in my timeline and I don't know what it is, what it represents, or how to get rid of it. (see attached) Thanks in advance!
You have in and out points set ... see the blue lines bracketing the gray-up section above the time-bar?
To remove them, Ctrl/Cmd-shift-I removes in points, Ctrl/Cmd-shift-O removes out points. Setting in/out is a very useful and necessary skill ... I suggest learning about in/out points ... they do have basic timeline operation tutorials and info available.

Sure. And note the key-short that Averdahl posted that takes off both in and out points with one command.
That can be useful enough in certain workflows that I know of people who change that to a one-key short for speed of use
