Why is PP's interface sometimes extremely slow?

I've been having an issue off and on for months now, maybe longer, where PP's interface will become extremely laggy at seemingly random times. Most of the time it's reasonably responsive but I'll be in the middle of working and suddenly it will slow to a crawl. After (almost) every click I have to wait at least 30s, sometimes more than minute, before I can interact with the interface again. Panels won't open or close, windows can't be scrolled, controls can't be clicked, hover states are not recognized, etc. I've noticed that during this time the blue playhead and it's vertical line in the timeline will be flickering like it's struggling to render the interface. Video playback doesn't seem to be affected much though. It continues to play as smoothly as normal. Also, certain things don't seem to trigger the lag and switching to another sequence in the timeline always works and un-freezes the interface as well, provided the issue isn't also occurring in that sequence.

There will be long periods of time when everything is working fine but when it starts it continues to happen with that project. Restarting the computer doesn't seem to help. It might clear up for a few minutes but then it will start again. Clearing the media cache and deleting render files does not help. I've been through a few updates and the problem has persisted. From watching the performance monitor I've noticed that when it happens the graph for "3D" under GPU jumps up to ~40% and stays there for the duration of the time the lag is happening. It drops back to 0% when the lagging is done. The rest of the system is more or less idle during this time (~5% CPU usage, ~30% RAM usage, no real disk usage). No other applications are running. Here are my system specs:

  • AMD Threadripper 1920x
  • G.Skill 32GB DDR4 RAM
  • EVGA GTX 1050Ti
  • 2 x Samsung 960 Pro 500GB SSD- one is the system drive and one is the project drive (the system drive currently has ~50GB free space and the project ~70GB free space but I've experienced this issue with a lot more free space than this before)
  • Windows 10 1809
  • PP v. 13.1.3 (was just notified a little bit ago of an update--I'll pull that down soon and see if it helps this time)

I've tried it with and without CUDA but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm currently working with 2K footage at both 24 and 60fps; h.264 in an MOV container. I've experienced this with other formats too though. In this case it's only happening inside a single nested clip. Come to think of it, I believe it started happening after I edited this clip in Audition. Also, I just noticed that the waveform in the audio track is not visible while this lag is happening and it shows up when it stops. Audition is not currently open though. I don't recall if I had been using Audition in the past when it's happened.

Did you edit clip in Audition or edit sequence? Those are actually quite different processes.

@R Neil Haugen

I used Edit Clip in Adobe Audition.

I guess I forgot to mention that checking for updated graphics drivers is always the first thing I do. They're up to date.

"Edit clip" is a "destructive" process, overwrites the original media, and in my experience could be odd at times. I always use the "edit sequence" option now, which replaces the timeline audio with new audio without overwriting anything. You might try that.

Ah, I guess that's `Edit > Edit in Adobe Audition > Sequence...` then. I didn't know about that option. I'll give it a try. Thanks!

I've got some more learning to do about Audition before I can use this option...

That gives you the full multitrack setup, and it's actually quite easy to layer effects in. You can also switch to Waveform view and back.

Checking as in using Windows Update or not?

Windows Update do always provide old driver versions relative to the ones downloaded directly from Nvidia.

No, I always update through NVIDIA's GeForce Experience app.

Start with downloading and install the latest driver to your graphics card: NVIDIA DRIVERS NVIDIA Studio Driver

Just wanted to note that I've seen this too... I usually just quit PP and restart PP or take a drink break and restart my computer. I'm not sure about struggling to render the interface, but I don't like the twinkling CTI. I'll try to note some things your are saying if it happens again.

This animated gif came out in a bit of slow motion, but this is what it looks like, just somewhat faster...
