I just downloaded Adobe Premiere Pro 2020. I opened the tutorials and played the first one but I'm not getting any audio. I checked the usual suspects from right clicking the speaker in the taskbar, I checked the Premiere Pro-specific audio bar, I checked the Preferences-Audio Hardware and nothing works. What am I missing?

Ah, I see. No, these aren't instructional videos. They're meant to be real footage with usable audio so you can practice editing. You can find instructional tutorials here: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/tutorials.html

Is there audio in the timeline? Full UI screenshots would be helpful here.

What happens if you bring your own video into that timeline or a new project, do you hear audio then?

I am absolutely new to Premier Pro. I tried the first tutorial and got
no sound. It shows a very large cursor moving around the upper left hand
side of the screen but I have no audio.
Thank you very much for your help.

I do see a couple of green bars on the right side of the screen going up
and down so it seems like it's receiving something.
Thank you very much for your help.

Can you please post full screen UI screenshots of Premiere, as well as a screenshot of your preferences showing the Audio Hardware section? Being new to Premiere Pro means we need to see exactly what you're looking at in order to give you the most useful advice.

Here are the screenshots.
Note the green bars on the right side of the "Screenshot while video in
first tutorial is playing." The move up and down during the playback.
Thanks again for all your help.

Nope, no luck. Are you clicking this button? All you need to do is click that, drag your images into the window, wait for them to upload, then hit "Done." If that worked then you should see a preview of the images in your post.

Hmm. I did that in reply to my first message. I see the uploads on my
desktop, but not on my phone. I'll try again. Patience is a virtue. 🙂

Thanks for posting those. Your audio output is set to your monitor. Do you have your speakers plugged into your monitor, or are you using audio out via HDMI?

What other audio output settings do you have? Have you tried switching to those?

I don't have a monitor. The speakers are plugged into the Headset Jack
on the front of the tower. There is an Audio Port (5.1 channel 3 jack) on
the back of the computer, but I'm guessing that that's for a sound bar. I
tried plugging into each of them, but got either nothing or terrible sound
quality in other apps.
The computer identifies the speakers as RealTec Audio (they are Bose),
but I checked with Dell and they said that's the name on the sound card in
the motherboard.
It looks like Premiere Pro defaults to DELL U2719D (NVIDIA High
Definition Audio) for output. I changed it to the RealTec Audio and I now
have sound when I play the example video in the first tutorials (!).
I do not get any narration sound in the first tutorials I've looked
at, only text and animation. Is that just the way they're made?
FWIW, I get sound in every other app or software I have tried, so far.
Thank you very much for your help

The Dell U2719D is a computer monitor model, so if you don't have a monitor, I'm not sure why you're seeing that. Unless you thought I meant audio monitor.

But either way, graphics cards can output audio through them and certain programs will often default the audio output device to the graphics card so it can route audio through the monitor. In fact, this is how I have my setup working. I have one set of speakers which is plugged into my monitor, but I have two computers. When I switch computers, which are both plugged into the same monitor, audio comes out of whatever computer I'm working on.

Looking at the screenshots you posted, there appears to be a voice-over track on the bottom, so if you're heaing the music you should be hearing the voice-over, unless you added an effect or lowered the levels all the way to zero. If you're still having issues, perhaps it's better if you start over with the tutorial and don't save the project.

And yes, Realtek makes the audio hardware, it has nothing to do with the brand of your speakers. It's all about what device is outputting the sound to your speakers.

Thank you.
I am hearing the voiceover that is a part of the video example within
the tutorial.
What I am not hearing is any instructional audio for the tutorial. I'm
only seeing text and animation.
I thought that maybe there is no instructional audio for the tutorials
I've seen, just text. Is that correct?
I don't think I have made any changes to the tutorials I've looked at.
And, if I did I always make sure I don't save any changes when I exit.
Thanks again.

So they are not made with instructional audio? If that's the case, I guess
that would explain why I'm not hearing any. 🙂

Yup, any tutorials with explanation will have to be watched as a standalone video. It just doesn't make sense to try to make a tutorial with explanation inside the program when there are no interactive elements. The concepts of editing are more important than what the footage looks like, so I recommend checking out the beginner tutorials in the link above. There are a lot of videos by great trainers which will get you started.
