But why? There is no requirement for sections to start on a right page. Doesn't really matter since I was able to remove them.

No, it only happened in the PDF; they don't appear in the InDesign document, and the chapters begin left or right.. Three blanks were added. I took them out of the PDF.

I didn't realize where the Save as PDF command was. I've done it now, but the PDF unaccountably adds three blank pages that are not in the original files. Thanks for your help.

Yes, splitting the first long section into two (one of text only and one of images only) helped. I've been renaming each version with date and number (Section A.7.8.1, Section 7.8.2 etc.) The images were dragged into picture boxes for the most part. thanks for your advice on cleaning up files; I will try it.

Many thanks, Barb. I thought there had to be a way to do it. I have to do some finishing touches and then will do it.

I don't know what the object in question is. By separating the text and art sections I was able to save the book. But apparently it's not possible to export the entire book as a single PDF. Perhaps Adobe engineers could spend their time more wisely than deleting scroll bars and figure out how to do so. Interestingly the same error message appeared when I tried to start the first page of the text on page 2 instead of page 1. I will send an email reply with the document.

How can a book be exported as one file? It seems to be exportable as sections only.

Yes, I've been Saving As and saving all my old copies (I'm looking forward to trashing them once this is done). Splitting the first long section into two, one of text and one of art, seems to have helped making it a book. But I think you're right, it's irrelevant. It doesn't seem to be possible to save it as one long PDF.

it was not practical to make one long document; there are several hundred pages. Other than using the Book feature, how is it possible to combine the files into one document?

I have seven files that will become a single printed book. I've tried to save them AS a book in InDesign. My first attempt was going beautifully. To establish the styles, I began with the first interior section, then placed the others. I added the front matter, and tried to drag it in front of the first text section. The attached error message then appeared. Now the error occurs whenever I try to place the first section and the program stops responding. Why would this happen? There are no errors in the file. It is very long; over two hundred pages. Should I split it up? Is there another way to combine files? I've considered adding two hundred blank pages and copying and pasting in place but that is ridiculous. Presumably I could make separate PDFs and combine them into one, but that would also be extremely tedious. Why would this happen? How do I prevent it from happening? The strokes around the many images are .25. It's possible some are duplicated but why would that be a problem? Chatting with Adobe's support was worse than useless. The slow responses suggested what I had already done; deleting and reinstalling the program and the computer. Evidently this problem is not solved in their potted responses.

Thanks, Barb. I didn't realize those were different things (you'd think I'd know by now). I've never had as much trouble as I'm having with this project. Hope you are well and happy.

I constantly forget where the "align text to baseline grid" is. According to Adobe's Help it's in the paragraph menu (where it should be) but it's not. Where do I find it? Thanks!

I am struggling with a very complex document: a bibliography of the works of Lewis Carroll. Virtually every entry has multiple formats. The ID line has an extra bold numeral followed by Italic, Roman or both, and/or all caps, and/or a Gothic font. Each description may include italic, roman, all caps, or small caps. There is a semibold italic introductory run in head at the beginning of each description. I have tried various ways to retain the formatting when flowing the RTF original into InDesign, keeping or not keeping the formatting, imposing or not imposing the InDesign styles. I have done a find/replace to change the flowed document style by style as well as changing the fonts with the Find/Replace type feature. The italic and small caps are consistently lost. Changing them tto match the 'Letter.Numeral" style changes the entire line to the paragraph style, thus losing the italic and sometimes but not always the small caps. Short of doing the hundreds of ID numerals by hand, what can i do to retain the styles? Change the numerals by fonts and size rather than the style?

Suddenly the text stops filling a text box; a large part of the box remains empty, no matter what I do.
The work around is to fit to text and flow to a new text box which I've put in place, but this may cause extra problems if the preceding text has to reflow. There is no page break I can find (and I deleted them all when I brought the text in from Word).
I am making corrections to this complex document, and this problem just started occurring.
I am attaching a screen capture and the original document. The problem is on page 30 (and others).

How does one discover the nature of the errors when the warning symbol appears at the bottom of a document? Please see attached file; this is what I see when I do preflight, or turn the arrowhead down: nothing. If there's overrun text when I try to make a PDF it usually tells me so, and where. But apparently there are other errors.

Apparently there are overflowing text boxes in my document, but there's no warning before exporting it to a PDF (which it does with no problem). The preflight panel does not include the suspect page. How do I find the page number where the problem is supposedly occuring?

You're right; it's much clearer. Yet another "improvement" that may have seemed liked a good idea at the time. Or was someone justifying his or her job by changing something that didn't need changing.

I thought this meant the error was on Roman numeral page "v" which doesn't exist (there are four pages with invisible roman numerals in the front matter section of the document). Many thanks for your help.

Oh, the obvious escapes me. But I didn't (and don't) see that symbol in the bottom of the Indesign window, and it didn't show up when I tried to save a PDF. There should be a simple menu item to see what the errors are when the warning appears. I still get the error message and still don't know how to solve the problem.
