Quentin, you are the man! This has been bugging me for ages and yours is the ONLY correct solution. Shame on Adobe.

I tried looking for the folder and files but the only folders within Adobe Indesign are Versions 18.0 to 20.0. None of them contain com.adobe.InDesign.plist. This problem makes Indesign completely un-usable.

If your problem is exactly the one that's OP reported, then try to enable GPU Performance in Preferences (if it's supported by your monitor at all, otherwise it will be grayed out.)
If GPU isn't available, then there's no other known solution for this particular problem in InDesign 2025. You'll need to downgrade to InDesign 2024 until this is fixed. (There are numerous recent threads on the forum pertaining to this bug.)

Yes, I made the mistake of updating the system. I'm going to go back to the previous one, I think. There are other problems with Sequoia; things Apple seems to think are cool but are a pain in the neck (and other places).

It will work with any font that actually has all four faces (or any equivalents you're using, such as Light or Heavy). It will not, as Word does, "synthesize" a Bold-Italic face if the font does not have one. And it will not reliably map from, say, SomeFont Italic to AnotherFont Oblique.
ETA: And just to cap this off, much of what you're asking about and what causes problems with Word import is that Word does have that "helpful" feature of bolding and italicizing using a literal override of the font. You can even "bold" fonts like Impact and Hobo Heavy. This hack is convenient for Word spot-formatters whipping out a report or memo, but creates a messy file that apps like ID can't process cleanly... hence any imported text using this method will have bad or missing formatting.

Thanks, James. I've started making corrections in the book itself. The Community is so much more helpful than the Adobe help.

Bonus tip: When I have a long text thread (and this certainly qualifies) I like to break up the text formatting and editing from the layout. I make a separate InDesign file for just the text so I can edit and adjust without dealing with the layout. Then I just copy and paste the text back into the main file.

Double-click with the Selection Tool on the error sign to bring up the Preflight panel. Select the text box that has the error and use Edit > Edit in Story Editor to see the issue (such as overset text or additional line spaces) and correct it.

You're right; it's much clearer. Yet another "improvement" that may have seemed liked a good idea at the time. Or was someone justifying his or her job by changing something that didn't need changing.

Was having same problem. This worked for me when I did not have the text tool selected and then selected my preferred default styles (a paragraph style and no character style).

An Adobe font (Garamond Premier Pro) is showing oddly in PDFs — and inconsistently so. Is this because of someone else's computer? He is using a PC, not a MAC (which I am), but that should not make any difference. These are the smallest file size; I'm hoping the higher resolution will not have the problem.

Some characters that look fine in the original InDesign document are not appearing correctly when translated to a PDF. These are smallest file size PDFs for review. A couple of characters are not in the Roman Alphabet, but "A" is a Roman character. Another "improvement" on the part of Adobe?

I think you're right. I just spent ten minutes using the help search with everything from the exact pop-up name of the icon to every combination I could think of. If the content is in there, I couldn't find it.
(That's one thing I recall from the days of more frequently switching apps. Changing to, say, a new word processor often had a nearly vertical first step, simply because no two software houses used the same terminology for common elements, and until you figured out the nomenclature, you could search forever and not find the feature that was essentially the same as that of your last tool.)

For fonts, the resolution is irrelevant. Fonts are vector elements. That the font is displayed as boxes points to a font problem. The font is well an OTF font?

Thanks, Barb. I'm going to try your system. What I do is simply find/replace type. This may not be clearing all the old styles properly. Where exactly is the styles override highlighter? Well, I'll look!

I don't know what the Object Style defined is. How does that apply to a type style? I've never consciously used it.

I never use it Noto, but it appears in the inDesign fonts list as open.
Make a new doc with a text frame, set some Noto and use Find/Replace Font... to check the path. If it is Activated from Adobe Fonts and not in your system, you may have opened a doc containing Noto, and it auto activated—could be something like a single insertion point with Noto applied.

What I want to know is WHY the character style occurs at all as I have not selected it or applied it, and how to avoid its appearing when I have not selected it or applied it. The program seems to choose more than one style to apply. I'll stop using the basic paragraph style; it does seem to be more trouble than it's worth.
