Very strange indeed. What are your InDesign import setting, keep or remove formatting on place? And: is the source .doc or .docx? Maybe you can share the Word file so we can have a look?

My guess would be that there is a default Paragraph and/or Text style that gets applied that has very very narrow tracking applied. What happend if you select al text, hold down Alt_Shift and click on the Basic Paragraph style in the Paragraph style panel? Does the 'reset' to the default font size etc. bring back the 'spaces'?

That is the default colour for the paragraph shading, for some reason this default paragraph shading colour makes it always back to an idml, you can safely ignore it.

On the top left you see a 'A' and 'P' paragraph symbol, click on one of those to change the left/right order 😉

When you say that InDesign does not see the fonts, do you mean everywhere (in Paragraph Styles etc.), or do all of your documents get a missing font warning, or do you mean in the font menu? If the latter: are you sure you have no filters used like favorite or TypeKit in the font-menu?

As I said, design it as form and export as interactive PDF, they can then fill in the space you designed on their computer directly in the PDF (design as text field form).

Uwe, WordsFlow is in use here by myself, but reading the original post it looked more like a form: the client wants to fill in a digital version if I read it correctly.

You can best try to make it a form, create fillable text fields and export to interactive PDF; this forms can be filled in in Adobe reader as digital form. If they however want your design as a Word file (sigh... big big sigh...) then export to PDF, open that in Acrobat Pro and export from there to Word while keeping the geometry.

That is the problem, your clients can set Adobe Reader as they like, however, the solution is correct so, yes: you have to inform your clients to turn this option off in the Reader...

First make sure you really have selected a Assignment, sometimes you have to click again to make sure is my experience. However since they are not even there greyed out, you could first try the good old delete preferences trick, 99% change that will fix it.

Some first things first: as memory serves me well, Press Quality (never use that, go for a PDF X standard!) is not color managed, so RGB black will stay RGB and CMYK black will stay CMYK which of course means different blacks. Also if you do color manage to CMYK that will result in different blacks, 100% K verses process black of CMYK values. This you can fix by the way in Acrobat Pro afterwards. Second: for print your blend space should be CMYK in most cases and is the standard when you choose a new document for print, what is the reason you set it to RGB? Third: what are your settings for handeling black in the preferences (appearence of black)?

interactive PDF simply does not support this, the only thing that will work are of the hyperlink kind (like http, mailto or navigation links inside the document like index, cross refs, TOC or anchors (text, page). Hide/show buttons will also work but no MSO or animation stuff. If you want all this you have to forget PDF and use FXL ePub instead...

The problem is that iBooks keeps very strict to the ePub3 standard that says that everything has to be included in the epub file itself (video, images, sound etc). That is why things like embedding code for Youtube, Google Maps etc. and every use of an iFrame will not show up in iBooks. Adobe is more relaxed in this standard, so online or ADE4 will work.

Wow... lets me honest here: you have to learn InDesign first if you do not even understand how to type in your own dimensions in the New Document dialog. If you can not even understand how to do this you can forget any next steps in working with InDesign: you need to be educated. You can follow training at a college or on-line like Lynda.com or do some self-study by buying a book about InDesign. But, to answer you question anyway: set the measurement preferences to inches and type in your dimensions in the New Document dialog as BarBinder shows in the screenshot.
