A few folks have made this in the past. Sniff tallies or serial port and create an AAF. (Sony had it back in the day on their linear edit controllers.) The pasted items do not refer back to the original session - they are new instances. The relink workflow I was talking about we had working in an Audition/Premiere hybrid. The first pass of the editorial was done using raw interview in PP.  At the same time the sound mixer created an Au session with the raw interview file, matching the session start time to the interview start timecode.  Au guy did tidy up and exported a mixdown of the tracks. PP guy would then relink the raw audio in his sequence to that mixdown. I tried the same thing in Au but the relinking loses any clip gain and effects applied. It also relinked incorrectly (both guest & host mics were relinked to the same mixdown clip)   I guess the answer is to start the edit with the mixdown file (exported before cleanup begins, with link to multitrack session embedded). The reason I use ultra small H264 files (which are v poor quality) is to use google drive to get proxies back from location quickly with variable internet connections. Waves vocal rider is similar - https://www.waves.com/plugins/vocal-rider - only $59 at the moment. Not really built for gating though, more just levelling out a clean vocal recording and have it sit in the mix (there is a 'spill' setting on the 'live' version - but it only stops the leveller from reacting to the spill, as far as I can make out, rather than reducing the volume at that point). ... I haven’t used the hardware automixers but assume they are just a gate/expander per input, with maybe additional gates with side-chaining if there are ‘hero’ mics. BUT there must be plug-ins that will act like a gate, with threshold/attack/release/hold/ratio parameters, that result in volume/gain automation - that can then be tweaked. You can use EditReady to convert an 8 channel master with multiple tracks (choose H264 & AAC pass through). Beware that, if you import the resulting file, PPro doesn’t correctly map the tracks (A3 appears as A1, A1asA2 etc) ... View more

You want a noise gate. The effects/dynamic effect would help you here. Try the auto-gate - adjust threshold for where the gate opens, attack for how quickly it open, release for how slowly it closes etc. You could also look at Dynamic processor plug in and use the noise gate presets there to start you on your way. Audacity has 'truncate silence' which is also destructive but is an alternative. It also has 'silence finder' which will add tracks to mark where silences end. Which could be a help in locating edit points for pull-ups. ... View more

ProTools (and LogicProX, apparently) has 'strip silence' which can lift out the sections that are below the threshold - so you could step through and tighten up the conversation. Theres a feature request you can vote on. I don't think, from my very limited understanding of it, that the Audition 'remove silence' option will do you many favours. It's destructive & you can't set different thresholds for individual tracks. Presumably you'd have to deal with the tracks in an interleaved format, or as a mixdown, as if you deal with them as individual tracks then you will lose the relationship between them. You are stuck with doing it manually, although the pull up should be fairly consistent so you may be able to speed it up with a macro. ... View more
