Hi Neil, So I've read all of the above and think upon reading your information I will link my RGB images to my InDesign document. Can you tell me what I am asking the printer for? If it is just the PDF spec, how do I, when exporting the PDF to that spec, export it with all the images as CMYK should they be required in CMYK need to please? I have looked through the PDF options and I cannot see this as an option? And if I'm not changing the images from RGB to CMYK myself (as I think it sounds way too complicated to do it without knowing exactly what options you're selecting and not selecting, Id hate to mess up the jpgs) I don't need to worry about the colour management side of things do I, I can let the print house do that? It's all gone a little quiet and I really need some help on this if anyone can help please?

If I get the colour management spec (is that what it's called?) and the PDF spec from the printer, could you help me make sure I have set it up right for them. Would really appreciate help on this. All this talk of colour set ups has worried me greatly, I'm just amazed that my previous jobs have printed correctly when I have been seemingly not doing it correctly? Arggghhhh!

So, if I've got CMYK jpgs in my InDesign document (the jpgs were changed simply from RGB to CMYK in Photoshop and Illustrator, this is the way I have always done it and didn't know it was wrong) and want to PDF my artwork (once I hopefully have PDF specs from my client's printer) would I be better off going back to the original jpgs (which are RGB's) and linking those instead of the CMYK version and then send the PDF to the printer, or do I change them to the new way of changing all the images from RGB to CMYK (if I can understand how to do it) and send the PDF using those JPG's instead? I'll be honest, I'm totally confused and this job has got to be at the printer's by Friday, so now I'm a bit stressed!

Thanks so much Neil and Test Screen Name, I love an analogy too and yours NB describes the situation very accurately, all I have is that it's an advert going in a magazine so I have requested the printer details saying that it's imperative that I have them in order to set up the files correctly. I will read your posts above, I was not aware that there was a more accurate method of changing an image from RGB to CMYK than to just change it in Photoshop from RGB to CMYK (Ive never been taught another way) and I want to achieve as good a print job as possible, I just hope your posts are in simple terms that I can understand as replies on here, whilst much appreciated, can get a little jargony and complicated sometimes I think. What if your client is unable to get the print details from the print house or is reluctant to give you the contact details of the print house directly (goodness knows why!), how on earth do you know whether to leave the images as RGB or change them to CMYK, I am worried that if I leave the images as RGB for the print house to sort out and the print house don't think to change them to CMYK the end result will be awful? I have this same trouble with trying to get the PDF spec from some print houses, it's like pulling teeth, I am going to have this issue with this current job too if I cannot get hold of the print house's contact details. I just want to make sure I set the artwork up as best I can for the best results.

I heard from a fellow graphic designer a little while ago that they'd had problems when sending artwork that included transparencies to repro, I'm thinking of including some transparent areas (maybe 50% transparent) on a piece of artwork I am doing and just want to know if there is anything I should know before sending it to repro? Can transparencies be tricky when printing (professionally)?

Jacob, What do you mean "avoid colour wrecking from a double conversion (CMYK>RGB>CMYK)", what is colour wrecking and what's a double conversion? "(also differentiated depending on kind such as higher resolution for line art/monochrome)" Can you explain this a bit more please, I don't understand your terminology here? Thanks for the links. I think to summarise it's best to speak to the printers who will receive the print job, isn't it?

Gotcha, thanks so much. Whilst I'm here and because you have referred to 'saving a copy as PDF and let the printer get the best possible from it' can I just ask another question, I hope you don't mind, it's just something that plays on my mind and I'd like to know whether I am doing something wrong? Often when I have sent items to be printed professionally and have asked the print house for their PDF specifications in order to set up my PDF correctly for the best possible results I am often met with a question as to why I am requesting them, (by PDF specifications I mean the options that I am showing in the screen snaps below, and all the options that come within those selections), am I wrong to be asking for this information from the print house or is there just a 'standard' pdf I should send and let the print house make sure the result is of a high quality? I am wary of sending a PDF willy nilly as I worry that it may be too low resolution when printed. Thanks, and sorry for the extra question!

Okay, I'm a bit confused (I'm more creative than mathsy!) but let's say I create the tile 40mm x 40mm, I drag the tile into the Swatches to make a pattern tile, then create an area which I fill with that pattern and save the artwork, which includes that patterned area, as for example a pdf, are we saying that the extra transparent pixels will appear in my pattern when printed professionally?

Hello Ton, so I just went to change my document size from mm to pixels in order to make the doc 113px and thought all would become clear but I'm trying to work out how you know 113 pixels would not give me extra transparent pixels, can you explain for me please? Is it just a case of always just using pixels and therefore no fractions of pixels will be used (because they don't exist)? I would most likely be exporting the tile at 300dpi for professional printing. Many thanks.

Yes, I was deleting the W value before putting the asterisk in, I never knew you could add something after the value, that's so clever! Yes, crossposting indeed. Thanks again, chuffed to bits, I have a lot of repeat patterns I want to enlarge to this size so this now will save me a lot of time.

I have a 'tile' which I created a few years ago at a (now seems) random document/artboard size and I want to transfer my patterns from the old tile/artboard size to a new (rounded number 0f 40mm) size. I have to make sure that the pattern resizes perfectly, if it doesn't the tiles won't match up and my repeat pattern will look bad, so my question is, (using the screen snap attached as reference, the square outline being my new 40mm artboard/tile size and the black square being my previous tile/artboard size) is there a way I can resize the black background and the all of the pattern to fit the new tile/artboard size perfectly please? I realise that if it was just the black square alone I could set it the X and Y co-ordinates a 0 and make the box 40mm x 40mm but the flowers are the tricky bit and the spill over the black box (until I crop them to make the finished tile for repeating) and therefore to select all of it and set X and Y at 0 won't be correct. What ideally I need to do is select everything and just resize the black area with the flowers following along so once the black box is in place if the flowers have followed the resizing and repositioning of the black box then the flowers will be in the exact position they need to be to make a perfect tile. I hope I am explaining this clearly! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks SJRiegel, this is the technique I have used in the past but have wanted to know for ages if there was a way to move two control /bezier handles concurrently. Hi Jacob, If I select the two anchor points with my Direct Selection Tool by click dragging, the control handles don't appear (shown below)? The same thing happens if I try to select one anchor point, hold down shift and select the second anchor point.

I am drawing a teardrop shape and want to select and move the two ringed control handles upwards at the same time so that the teardrop is exactly the same shape on both sides, is there any way to do this? Thanks.

I have never seen this before and it has just started happening, seemingly of it's own accord! When I go to type the type tool in Illustrator it's not typing the text in a straight horizontal line, can anyone help please? Have I possibly, accidentally ticked something on? I have attached a pic with a ruler included to show how wonky the text is. Please help, this is so frustrating, I'm trying to design a logo for a client and can't get on!

I have an A4 artwork document I have set up in Illustrator, the artwork has all been created in Illustrator (and changed to CMYK ready for professional printing) but I have also placed a (300dpi CMYK) photograph with a transparent background into the Illustrator artwork and want to check that this is okay to go to professional print like this? I normally set my artwork up in InDesign and place a psd or Illustrator ai into the InDesign doc and go to repro that way but I'd like to know if this way I describe above is also okay? Also, I am sending this doc to my client (for future printing) and would like to know if it would be better to embed the photograph or just keep it linked and send the photograph along with the .ai or eps print ready file? Many thanks for any help and advice on this.

Hi Twarita, Can you confirm that my client can share with me the raw images they have downloaded so that I can create their artwork or do I have to pay and download them again? I need a member of the Adobe staff to confirm this please. If my client has downloaded the images under his name and not the company’s name is this a problem for sharing them with me or using them to create artwork for the company?
