I tested the document with NVDA and the document reads as expected. What do you consider "Funny"? and what screen reader are you listening to the document in?    Here are a few things to note:   1. Your alt-text is going to have the word "Graphic" every other sentence or so because it informs the user they are still inside the description of the image.    2. If you are reading it with Adobe Read Aloud, you are not going to get the results you are hoping for. Read Aloud is a text-to-speech tool and not recommended or considered assistive technology by most AT users. However if you want it to be read by Read Aloud you are going to need modify how your "Figures" are tagged. Right now there are paths but also live Text. Read Aloud will try to read the text inside the Figure even though it shouldn't. So you should tag the live text as figures or convert them to outlines in your source. Otherwise Read Aloud is going to try to do more than it should and mix up all your live text inside the figures.   I have tagged your first section to show you what I mean. Often times this has to to with the embedded font set within the document. If you are using a font that only exists in the document and not on your computer as well and someone did not embed all the characters, the missing characters will not be available to you.    ... View more

@garyb  The OP is talking about the C  I headers. Acrobat is treating it as a column border or graphic object rather than the letter I. I am suspecting because it is a san-serif font and no surrounding text.  @smolkabbage  I would ask though, are your plans to make this accessible? If so, you will need to make this into a proper table to be compliant. OCR is just the first step. The interactive buttons should have Names and Descriptions (tool tips). These are what the screen reader is looking for. If you have access to the InDesign source you will want to edit those properties. Also, understand that Adobe Read Aloud is not a valid Screen Reader it is considered a Text to Speech reader and may not read all info as desired. You will want to test with NVDA or JAWS which are the two accepted standards for screen readers today. Most of the time the "possible inappropriate..." errors are because the placement of the current object is set to inline but it is not nested as an inline item. While I is "Next item" and understandably you would think it would read the entire item, many times it will not. You can try retagging but Insert + Down Arrow is "Read from this point on"   I do realize that is not exactly what you are asking for but it is worth mentioning that JAWS has many bugs and tries to interpret text in ways that is not very useful. The same can be said for NVDA. It is the nature of screen readers. All screens are 72dpi. That is how screens work. If you are generating an email signature, your best bet is to know exactly how many pixels wide and tall is needed. Typically my email signatures are between 150 and 300px. The goal is NOT to resize the image in your email program. The goal is to have a 1:1 ratio so that no unncessary compression is taking place. Find out what size it is in his signature. Screenshot and Crop in Photoshop to get an idea if you need to. Then export a PNG that specific pixel size from AI. If you know that is the final resting place of your owl, I would suggest bringing a copy of the background into your PSD. Place it below your owl layer. Then select the area around your owl, Invert that selection and make it a mask for your background layer. Then save your psd. This will create the illution of transparency and allow the geometry to appear behind the owl. The other way you could do it is just to edit the container of the geometry to trace around the owl. When creating your design, keep in mind that there are two types of black: standard black and rich black. Standard black uses only black ink (100% K), whereas rich black contains elements of other colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow). Seems like making a Master Page with the frames in the correct places as previously explained would be the best approach. While not required, and from a purely semantic point of view, your headings should really contain the 1.0 Heading, 2.0 Heading. This helps maintain organizational structure of your document. Your crashes are likely due to either a corrupt image or missing link. That is why saving to IDML clears those out. As a matter of good file management all links should be resolved before trying to export. Otherwise you are just exporting the low-res preview of the actual image. ... View more

I was definitely able to repeat this. I have a 96 page test file that contains lots of threaded/anchored images as well as placed non-threaded images. The entire document read order is set by the articles panel. In the 2020 version I get 9 of the images thrown in at the end in a new <art> tag. While in the 2019 version it exports perfectly. Could not figure out why only some of the images were ending up at the end though. Happy to post my test file somewhere if any Adobe techs are interested. This is definitely a repeatable bug. ...
