If you have created a new catalog called "Portfolio 3", it will be empty unless you did some importing of photos into it. It will be quite safe to use your operating system to delete the "Portfolio 3.LRCAT". Like an empty database, or a blank word document, there is no problem in deleting an empty catalog. If you did any importing and editing in "Portfolio 3" then you would lose that work when deleted. But there is a way to combine the two catalogs (2 & 3) if necessary. If you moved or renamed files in "Portfolio 3" then you may need further advice to fix.

used by another user This error message appears after Lightroom has crashed or has not been closed correctly. When Lightroom is running, a temporary file is created that is named with the suffix .LOCK When you close Lr correctly this xxxx.LOCK file is automatically deleted. This xxxx.LOCK file is what prevents the catalog opening, and results in the error message preventing you from opening this catalog. The remedy is to close Lightroom, locate your problem catalog (Portfolio 2....?) using the OS Finder/File Explorer, and delete the file that ends with .LOCK and restart Lightroom. (Your system must allow you to see file-type suffix!) CAUTION: Do not delete the catalog file that ends with .LRCAT The Adobe help page for this is- Lightroom catalog cannot be opened Note- If you create a 'new' "Portofolio 3" catalog, it is a new empty catalog. Do not do this, instead follow the above advice to have "Portfolio 2" working.

Normally when Lr sends a file to an external editor (then 'Save' from the editor) the file comes back to Lr as a separate new file. It would not show "1 of 2" anywhere. "1 of 2" indicates you are looking at a Virtual copy of the original, not the file from ON1. It is possible your folder Sort Order is set to 'Capture Time' and the new ON1 file is being placed at the very bottom of the images in the folder. Does setting the Sort Order to "Filename" have any result? The YY button may be selecting the Original and the Virtual copy visible next to it (not the ON1 file)

You need three major components- 1. Lightroom installed on the laptop 2. Your original images copied in the exact same folder structure as they were in the desktop. 3. The Nik Collection (except for HDR Efex) have to be added as External Editors in the Lightroom preferences Method- Plug-ins do not appear in Lightroom after installing - Nik Collection Help I have no explanation why Sypderchecker might have removed Nik (If it did?) It never has for me.

This is a 'bug' introduced in the latest release. Read about it - Mac Users on Backing Up: “Your Catalog Size Is Larger than 4 GB” | Laura Shoe's Lightroom Training, Tutorials and Tips If your catalog is really greater than 4GB then the catalog backup does work. You will only ever need a zip expander if you need to restore from a backup catalog.

If I perform brushing/masking in PS are those edits still editable/reversible. Maybe.! If I need to do a lot of cloning, spot removal, Heal Brush, work, then it has to be Photoshop. In Ps you can create a new empty layer above the background and set the tool option to "Current and Below" so that all the re-touching work is on its own layer (or multiple layers) that you can re-edit (in Ps). BUT only if you save the (PSD, TIFF) file to PRESERVE the layers. You will see the image in the Lr library, but 'Preserving the layers' in the file means- never doing any further edits in Lightroom, and always re-opening the file in Photoshop (Edit-In) with the option "Open Original" Note: The reason to "Open Original" is: If you do edit the file saved from Ps with further Lr Develop module adjustments, opening this adjusted image will flatten the layers and all the Ps layer information is lost. Hence the reason why many experts & gurus, recommend that do as much as possible in Lightroom and then Edit-In Photoshop as the last step in the editing workflow.

Hi Paige- Perhaps "Problematic Free" would be a better description. Renaming the Catalog, Previews folder, Smart Previews folder, all in the same format, is helpful, and many beginners (like I once was.. maybe still am ) appreciated the "safe" way to do things in the Lightroom world. It is not easy to understand when version updates create the "-2" name change and we get catalog file names like "My Lightroom Catalog-2-2" running in version 6.8. Agreed that the name is not important- if we only ever have ONE catalog. But renaming multiple catalogs helps understand their place in the operating file system. I am a little confused when the OP means by "renaming the existing catalog IN Catalog"- Is Gerhard really referring to renaming Collections, or folders?

In Windows-10 CC2015.8 Same as the OP seen here- Control points cannot be dragged off the curve line. As per trshaner- a right-click and 'delete' individual points, or 'flatten curve' deletes ALL!

Preset files have the filename suffix of .LRTEMPLATE (They are not .xmp -which are 'sidecar' files for individual photos.) If you bought presets, you may still have them in a compressed .ZIP file that requires expanding. My G602 works very well with Lr in Windows-10, including tone curve. Accuracy is great, buttons can be programmed (Grid view, Loupe view, Develop module, etc) even multiple key presses. Have you set DPI sensitivity in the Pointer settings?

Your problem is beyond my knowledge, and requires an expert answer. But a thought is- If you 'Edit In' using a raw file image (NEF, CR2, etc), then a new file is not created until you actually 'Save' the file in Photoshop (and what are your 'Save' options in PS?). This is when Lightroom will become aware of the new pixel file and add it to the catalog (ie. a secret "import") When do you see the error messages? Random? or when you do some specific action. Is it possible that Photoshop is doing automatic "Saves" that trigger the error?

What are the details you used in the Destination Panel? I suspect you may have renamed the files by date, but had the 'Organize' option set to [into one folder]. Do not re-import. It is easily possible to use the Metadata Filter to select photos by date (Year, Month, Day) and drag them to appropriate folders in the folder panel. (Right-click in the folders panel to create new folders.) The date format options in the import dialog are also very confusing (they were for me!).

The Import dialog (in expanded view) also has a sort order option so you see the images to import in a sorted order. Consider this- Image files saved to camera cards or hard-drives are never in any 'sorted' order, they just fill any random space on the recording media allocated by the operating system of camera or computer. It is the software you run that arranges the files in the sort order you select.

It can be done! Quite simply in fact. I use this technique for workshops. Your camera must be capable of tethering with Lr. If you have that working then all is good! You may need to set the Lr grid sort order in the library grid view to 'capture time' to see the latest image on screen as they are taken. You can use for Full Screen so you see only the image, and not the Lr interface. The digital projector I connect and 'mirror' the computer screen. (In Windows 10 press [Windows+P] and select 'Duplicate' .) The projector can be connected by HDMI cable (mirrors the laptop screen ratio ), or VGA cable (which converts the laptop screen to the projectors format.) You may need cable adapters if the laptop has mini display port, or some other video port. Edit: The 'Watch' folder is not the Auto Import watch folder. The 'Watch' folder is only needed when using the Auto Import function- NOT with tethering. Setting up the tethering options allows you to nominate the folder where the images get saved. Using the 'Auto Import' function in Lr might only be necessary if you are using another software method of tethering the camera- like DigiCamControl. With Lr tethering- Nikons 'save' only to the computer. Canons 'save' to both the camera card and the computer.

Crickey! You and me both, have been caught out by the quirks and foibles of the Lightroom interface. Those tiny triangle arrows for menus and options are everywhere- and often hard to see- Especially that dark grey (black) one on the Adjustment Brush panel that collapses the sliders and shows the "Amount" slider.

I think the answer is to- Plug the external drive into the desktop, (the drive with both catalog and photos) Use Finder/Explorer to locate the catalog (xxxx.LRCAT) file on the external drive. Double click the xxxx.LRCAT file. This should open Lightroom with your catalog intact and complete. If you find that images are 'missing' [!] or folders are 'missing' [?], then seek further advice. Do NOT re-import anything, that is not the way to re-connect your catalog and photos.
