If you have searched all drives and not found any  xxx.LRCAT  files.  You do not have a Catalog! Have you searched for  xxx.LRCAT.ZIP   files on all drives?  Lr6 versions create backup catalogs in ZIP format. Have you been making regular catalog backups since April 2016 ? Why wouldn't the catalog have moved over with all the other data? I do not have an answer for that. It is not a Lightroom problem. Maybe the Apple Store can give an answer. The Apple Store data transfer may not have been 'complete'. How do I create a new catalog? Lightroom may automatically ask you to start a new catalog when you run Lr. Or- on the Lr Menu>File>New Catalog... Or- hold down the [Alt] key when you start Lr and a dialog opens showing all existing catalogs and an option to [Create a new catalog...] A new catalog will require you to import all your photos by using the "ADD" option in the import window, and choose the top-most folder of your images on the external drive. (or just choose the Drive as the 'source') "ADD" will leave all you photo files in their exact same location and folder structure. The most likely answer is that you opened an 'old' catalog-  one you created before you did the deletions and edits. Maybe you opened a previous 'Backup' catalog. A mistake that can lead to confusion. backup file from about two weeks ago This is probably the latest version of your work, and if so, make this your 'master' catalog. You do know that Lightroom catalogs do not contain your photos? A catalog is like a library index that has references to your photo files. Good practice is to only have the one working catalog in a common place like "My Documents" or a "Pictures" folder. Is it possible you are importing the picture from a folder on the hard-drive to another folder on the Hard-drive using the "Copy" method? This will leave the original where it is and put a copy in the 'Destination' folder as well. So you couldn't move it back to the original folder from the Destination folder using Lr. With a new computer the Printer driver installed may change with the operating system. You can copy Lightroom print templates from the 'global' location of Lightroom Settings- (old computer to new computer) C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Print Templates\User Templates If you store preferences "with the catalog"- look there. I would be doing this in Photoshop. Open a new 'document' that is 4:3  (eg. 1920x1440pixels) Black background. (Save a Ps 'preset' or a Black 4x3 photo in Lr) Open the 'Portrait' image in Ps (from Lightroom-  Ctrl+E) and drag "Move tool"  it onto the Black 4:3 document. Use Transform [Ctrl+T] to resize and fit on the 4:3 document.  (Hint: To see all the Transform frame press [Ctrl+zero]. ) Save as a jpg for the digital screen. I click the Right upper hand corner and choose the path. I highly recommend you expand the Destination panel in the Lower-right. This will give previews and small indicators on folders telling you exactly where files are being stored. The + indicates new folders being created. My .lrcat file has a lock attached when LR is closed. This is a mis-understanding. Any 'LOCK file is NOT a catalog with the 'lock' extension added. It is only a temporary file that indicates that Lightroom is running and cannnot be opened a second time by another user. If Lightroom crashes, or is not closed in the correct manner- then the .LOCK file remains- until you correct the error by using the OS to delete it. The .LRCAT catalog file will always remain as it was. (unless you accidentally delete it) My back up does too. This would not occur unless you used the operating system to copy the file to your idea of a backup. Lightroom Backup catalogs are created by Lightroom (when it is running) and would not have the .LOCK suffix added. Should I delete the previews/smart previews, There is no reason to delete ANYTHING ELSE other than the one file that ends with  .LOCK I can see the .lrcat.lock file when I open my virgin LR Exactly!!! and correct. That is the purpose of the .LOCK file-  to indicate that a catalog is in use by Lightroom. But when I close it I do not see any .lrcat file You must be looking at the wrong location for the catalog. If you can open a 'new' catalog then there must be a .LRCAT catalog file existing. My son runs it very well on a Surface Pro 3 (Windows 8, with Photoshop and several CAD design programs) I run CC2015.7 in Windows-10 on a Dell XPS13 very well. A reason for your problem? not known. Can you check 'permissions' on all the drive folders that Lr uses, particularly the   \AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\   folder. Full Read/Write permission would be necessary. Where do you see- "no effect difference to my photos."  ? Is that in Lightroom or with another program/viewer? In Lightroom with an image selected in the Develop module- Open the "Navigator" panel and scroll the mouse over the presets in the Preset panel- that navigator preview will show the effect of the preset on the photo. Click the Preset to apply it to the photo in the main window. All Lightroom develop edits are 'Virtual'. Meaning- they only exist in the Lightroom catalog database. If you only stay within Lightroom and 'raw' images- it is non-destructive. No debate. Raw data in a file is not altered. Once a photo moves to a 'pixel' format- then Yes! I agree with you. All bets are off. A 'pixel' image can be changed in so many ways, by so many different programs. Lightroom does not protect you from pixel editing with external programs, including Photoshop. But even a JPG image file can be edited in many ways within Lr using Virtual copies, history, and snapshots, and the original image file is un-touched when you export a 'copy'. Just adding some general knowledge- 1. when the Lightroom program is 'running' or open- you will see the catalog folders like this in File Explorer- (with your catalog name) 2. when Lr is shut down- you will see the catalog folders like this- If LR is not closed down with the proper method of exiting- you will see the 'lock' file remaining and preventing Lr from re-opening. To allow Lr to re-open, You must never delete anything other than the file ending with the suffix  ' .LOCK ' The file that ends with the suffix file-type ' .LRCAT ' is your Catalog and must not be deleted. If it has been deleted- the options are to restore if from Trash, or look for zip Backups to extract and replace the deleted .LRCAT file by copy and paste to the same original location. ... I have seen other reports of the same symptoms as the OP- 'mov' files preventing import. but I have never had a similar problem with my procedure- When you view all files in the import window- 1. set the sort order to- "Media Type" 2.
