What kind of preset is it? A Develop preset? Those are the most common, but there are also Export, External Editor, FTP, Filter, Import, Local Adjustment, and Metadata presets. And maybe others. Not fixed! Cursor is a 'Double-arrow' when crossing fast onto Folder Panel. It occurs randomly when moving mouse cursor from grid to Folder panel. It occurs more frequently when mouse movement is fast. It does not occur when I move the mouse very slowly across the panel border. I have successfully used this method both in Library Grid view and in a Collection view. I have tried selecting 'all' in the grid [CTRL+A]  and selecting a few  [Hold CTRL + click several] or [ Click First then SHIFT+click Last]. Works every time. Thinking more about your requirements- Is the HD with 5000+ images returned to you?  If so then the client needs only to Flag or Star Rate their selected images and return the HD with the catalog to you. If the HD does not return, they maybe could create a collection of the wanted images, select the collection and "Export as a Catalog" , then send the Exported Folder with catalog back to you. To Export a LIST of File-names- the best option would be to have a plug-in like "LIST VIEW" from John Beardsworth the link- List View – Lightroom Solutions – John Beardsworth To Export IMAGES from a text list-  1. Edit the list of wanted images in Notepad (any text editor) with image titles separated by commas (and no spaces)  eg.  Image123,Image256,Image344,Image509 2. Select all and copy in the text. CTRL+A  CTRL+C 3. Go Back to Lightroom with the folder of images selected- 4. In the Library Filter Bar select [Text] [File-name] [Contains] 5. Place cursor in the search field and paste- CTRL+V In the "Search" Field you will now see [Image123,Image256,Image344,Image509, etc] and you should see a limited number of images that contain the multiple file-names. 6. Select all visible thumbnails and create a new collection (set as target) Then you can do more searches for multiple images if needed and add each batch to the collection. 7. Export the images from the collection. I do not know the limits of the number of file-names you can filter search in this manner! Just give it a try. As Granny said- "You cannot make a silk purse from a sow's ear." Briefly- DNG files are fully un-processed RAW files with 14-bit data. JPG files are compressed "lossy" 8-bit rendered files. There is little point in converting JPG to DNG as you cannot recover lost quality and lost image data from the jpg. And you can open JPG files in ACR, (from Bridge CTRL+R) but you will not have the full range of edit benefits that a 'true' raw image provides. ... View more

You cannot edit a RAW file! (By this I mean you cannot change the data in a RAW image file.) It always remains as original (SOOC). (with a few exceptions) Proprietary raw files, CR2, NEF, etc, can have the Lightroom edit adjustments attached in an accompanying .XMP file. DNG raw files can embed edit adjustments within the DNG file. .XMP and "Embedded" DNG are created by "Saving" edits to the file in Lightroom [CTRL+S]. Often it is only the Adobe programs- LR, & PS, that can see and interpret these 'Attached' 'Embedded' edits.
