how are you creating those tangential shapes/lines? could that have something to do with it? what document profile are you using? is snapping to pixels on? do those shapes have strokes?

for a while after Sierra came out, a good proportion of the queries here were about problems that arose as a result, so it wouldn't surprise me. i may update my Mac this weekend and see what's up then.

for adding templates to the 'new doc' window, I have a feeling it's just not working properly yet. compare the same window in photoshop: there's an obvious 'save' button and you can see templates saved the old way in the 'saved' space. not so in Illustrator. i can't reproduce your tabbing problem. seems fine here (Windows 7, illy v.21.0.0) the font window: yeah. at least it's better than it was.

yes indeed. i haven't experienced myself, but i have seen lots of people bringing it up in non-English language versions of Illustrator, which suggests to me the new window is somewhat broken for the time being.

if there is a way of doing it in illustrator at all, it is vastly easier to do in indesign. Merge data to create form letters, envelopes, or mailing labels in Adobe InDesign you don't have to master the software, just that workflow.

there's an option in Preferences > Type. Untick 'Fill New Type Objects with Placeholder Text'. this is the first time i've seen this feature too. seems a bit half-assed; just the same repeating paragraph over and over. why couldn't they have used indesign's system?

i just tried copying from a CS5-created file and one I just made in CC2017 and it seemed fine (i.e a new layer was generated in the blank new doc with the name of the one from the CS5 file).

what file type is it? did you open the file directly in illustrator, or place it? how does it appear in the layers panel when you select it? if you open the links palette, can you see anything there? if so, what does it tell you about the object(s)?

similar to this? Illustrator randomly selects unrelated objects i know it's no consolation really, as there's no real solution, but you can read about other user's workarounds. i have experienced this myself, but very rarely.
