Is there any reason you even consider software only? If you use GPU acceleration not only do you save time but you no longer need to check Use Maximum Render Quality the GPU does a higher qulityr job of rendering. But after you finish a typical project look at GPU loading with GPU-Z Sensors tab and see if you are using any accelerated effects or features before you consider an upgrade.

I do not use the Media Encoder. It is dynamical linked (I believe via Ethernet) to Premiere. I only use direct export from Premiere. Early development of our PPBM we found that the dynamic link method was not a good benchmark-able test. When we switched to direct export testing we found much more repeatable results Here is a software only export from Premiere showing 100% CPU usage This is one of the four tests in PPBM, the CPU intensive timeline export . Here all four test results; "91","62","24","233", Premiere Version:, 12.1.1.10 Exporting that same timeline which has many GPU accelerated effects and feature with my SC GTX 1060 6GB reduced that 233 seconds to 24 seconds. And yes, the export device was a Samsung Portable T5 USB 3 SSD, why don't you run the PPBM benchmark

That 300 watt PS might be your limiting factor. You may have to upgrade the PS to support a discrete GPU. A Quadro P4000 only requires 105 watts but you will have to find out if you system has that much power available.

Why would you even consider SSD RAID? By choosing the right SSD you can have all the speed you need. If you want redundancy software RAID is questionable and hardware RAID is expensive.

nVidia CUDA with your nVidia card can help improve performance only if you have CUDA accelerated effects in your projects/workflow. On PC's CUDA is built into the nVidia driver so it is not part of Premiere..

WOW there is an old forum friend still among us. Hello Eric! I may try the Startech out, but of course if I have a M.2 PCIe x4 drive I surely would use it where I got full speed out of it. I quickly looked at prices I think the Netstor is potentially a good fast Thunderbolt 3 box for the M.2 PCIe Gen 3 x4 carrier but it fails on the portability category as you have a big box plus a power brick. Well I have no Threadripper myself but have received PPBM test results from a number of people that seem to have found ways to run Premiere very successfully with a 1950X and a GTX 1080 Ti. I do not think it is necessary. I actually tested a single M.2 Pcie Gen 3 x4 single top quality SSD and my PPBM tests showed no problems. If you go to this page and scroll way down you can see my data. As long as you do not run out of storage space you will be fine. If you can install that second SSD, use it for archiveing finished projects

Well in my opinion I will never buy another hadr disk drive for editing Use them only for backup/archiving with big drives. You have those four noise-macking mechanical heat generating drives which have a mech higher failure rate than one simple SSD. That software RAID is going to use CPU cycles that could be better used by the timeline functions. Also your hard drive slows down significantly as they fill up And lastly they are terribly slow read and write rate performers, even with your RAID you are likely to have transfer ratein th 200 MB/second range where the Simples SATA III SSD those read and write rates probobly will be in the 400 to 500 MB/sec range. If you have to shave a little off your cost to beef up storage situation drop back to a GTX 1060 6 GB card instead of that GTX 1080. The GTX 1060 would be a better match price/performer with that quad core CPU

Sorry Warren but those maximum bandwidth numbers mean absolute nothing it is actual testing that is necessary for intelligent purchases. "The numbers in your screen shot look like standard hard drives connected via Thunderbolt (not SSD)." This statement is totally wrong, There is no hard disk drive ever made that can give you those kind of numbers. I will be very interested in your results. Different vendors do better at getting performance out of their devices and if they just quote maximum bandwidth for a specific interface versus real deliverable speeds they sometimes are cutting costs.

According to this test on an AKITIO TB2 Quad device I would be very skeptical of using TB2 with a SSD u100 device is very lousy perfomance. Maybe you have some better data, unfortunately I do not have much experience with TB

Definitely not SLI, nothing special. I can drop the second one in or remove it at any time and not change anything. And on my GPU page you can see what driver I used , Just now for you I dropped in the second GPU and they are running great on 385.69.

Since the problem is only USB related see if you can get rid of it by seeing if there is an update of the USB drivers or it your motherboard bios could be updated. Do you have UASP installed?

We are now getting to the point that, that rule may have to change. I actually ran a test that had everything on one much better M.2 PCIe gen 3 x4 SSD and with my Premiere Pro BenchMark (PPBM) and found only slight difference between that run and a multiple SSD Of course a lot depends on your media and workflow. I did this because some new and smaller laptops only have one intertan super speed SSD to see if this was practical and I deemed it a very usable configuration. But here is the performance of one of the best.

It depends on your project sizes and workflow, I have one each of the preceeding models, so I got hooked early. If you ever get a computer with a USB 3.1 port here is that same device as above on a USB 3.1 interface on my desktop. My workflow is as I start a new project I put all the media files and project files on the T5 and then when I finish the editing I pull the T5 and plug it into my desktop generally for export. Also the storage disk drive is a 5400RPM drive and totally unusable for video editing and while there is a SSD it is too small to be used for project files and media plus OS and applications.
