Eight days later, I finally figured out the problem. The folder I had my files in had come directly from a camera memory card, and it apparently had some kind of lock on it (even though I'm the administrator on my machine). I had unlocked individual files, but not the entire folder. I just created a new folder and copied the files into it, and voila! I can work on the files and save them--no "write permissions" errors. I thought I should post here in case anybody else has the same issue in future.

I'm glad you asked this; I came to the forum today to make a similar comment. I think the pink is a terrible choice. It's far too close to the InDesign color (especially since, for some reason, my InDesign icon did not update to the latest one even though I updated the app).

Interesting idea. At 144 dpi, it looks kind of in-between the Illustrator and the Word versions. BTW, the thinner lines also appear when I open a PDF version of the file in Acrobat.

They're not all the same, because the different brushes I used have weights that change with pressure. Quite a few of them are .5 pts, though. The difference in weights doesn't quite make sense--for example, the lines above the squirrel's eyes are the same tiny lineweight as the much thicker line of its lower arm. (Screenshot attached.) Because of this, I thought there might be a problem with the way the brushes I'm using render strokes, so that's why I tried expanding the strokes, but that didn't fix it.

Howdy: I'm drawing some coloring book pages for a client. They complained that some of the linework was too thin when they printed the page. So I went in and thickened the lines, saved the file as a PDF and re-sent it, and they said the lines looked exactly the same as before. I noticed the lines did indeed look thinner if I opened the PDF in Acrobat or if I placed it inside a Word file. Here's a screenshot showing the same file in the Illustrator window (left) next to the Microsoft Word window (right). You can see the lines in Word are thinner (it's especially noticeable in the little squirrel at the left, on the tree trunk). Most of these lines are drawn with a brush and stroked, so I tried expanding all those lines and resaving to the PDF (at Press Quality)--no difference. I tried resaving as an EPS and importing that into Word--no difference. I don't know how to make the lines the thickness they want, because what I see in Illustrator is not what they're getting in the end. I guess I could just make everything thicker than I think it should be, and hope the thinning in the conversion to EPS/PDF balances out, but that's a very annoying, slow workaround. Does anyone have any advice? Is there some preference in Illustrator I need to change? Maybe the lines are being "artificially" thickened on my Illustrator artboard, the way some people are seeing too-thick lines in Acrobat because of the "smooth line art" preference? I don't know what preference that would be, though.

I'm trying to make some adjustments in a .cr2 file, that I'm opening within Photoshop, but whenever I click "done" or try to save the file as a JPEG, I get "there was a write permissions error." I'm on a Mac running High Sierra, and recently updated Photoshop to the latest version (v 21.2). I have tried the following fixes: • creating a new admin account to test whether the error would recur for another user (it did) • installing the updated Camera Raw plug-in, downloaded from the Adobe website • deleting a third-party plug-in that I thought might be interfering • throwing away the Camera Raw preferences • switching the preferences between "Ignore sidecar XMP files" and "Embed XMP" (I have no idea what this means, but some commenter on another thread suggested trying it) • restarting Photoshop • restarting my computer • making sure the file is unlocked None of these things helped, and I obviously can't complete the job if I can't save the changes I made to the file. Any other ideas I could try? Thanks!

Thank you so much! I hadn't used the symbol sprayer tool in a while, and it was driving me crazy that I couldn't get to the scruncher and spinner, etc., without double-clicking on the tool, and then it didn't seem to work. For some reason I missed the addition of the "advanced" toolbar in whatever iteration of Illustrator introduced it. You have changed my life for the better!!

Does anyone else have problems with Adobe Type Manager's toggle button that turns fonts on and off on the website? I'm trying to turn some fonts on, but it's difficult to get the toggle to slide over, and then half the time it slides back the other way on its own, and the fonts keep getting installed and then immediately deactivated, and then I have to struggle with the toggle again. Another issue is that there's never been such a thing as "ignore" as a choice for those palette windows before, so I didn't know about it. I thought by leaving it blank, I had already set it to ignore. It seems that just clicking in there, maybe without realizing it, takes away the "ignore" and destroys it, even if you don't put a number in.

Thanks--I didn't understand the new symbol for the "space between" area, so I didn't see it. (I didn't actually put anything in there, so I'm not sure how the 0 got in there, but it wasn't set to "ignore.") It would be helpful if InDesign made it easier to find explanations of these changes. I've searched the site, and found no tutorial or anything on this new feature. It's probably up there somewhere, but searching for the name of the feature doesn't bring it up.

Adobe's new "space between paragraphs using same style" feature is really messing up my document. I would think it was a good idea, if they hadn't apparently destroyed the old paragraph spacing system in order to add it. I just tried to put some space after a paragraph that does not have a style applied to it, using the Paragraph palette window, and nothing happened. (I do not have the text aligned to a grid, or any interfering text wraps, or any character styles applied.) I now can't add any space after a paragraph unless I build a new style, and put amounts for both "space after" and "space between paragraphs"? I don't want to have to build a paragraph style every single time I want to add some space after a line; what a waste of time. Is there some preference I can adjust?? I can't see why they would have the "space after" option in the Paragraph window if it doesn't do anything, but how do I get it to work now? This issue totally screwed up my day today. I looked to see if Adobe had written out how best to use this new system, but found nothing.

So, I just found out about this feature, and maybe I'm not using it correctly, but on the document I'm working on, I had to add space to the "space between paragraphs" thing just to get the same result as a normal "space after." This is weird. I'm not trying to do a space after a bulleted list, I'm just trying to get spacing between paragraphs in the normal way. But the "space after" box doesn't do anything to those three paragraphs--they get no spacing at all unless I add the amount into the "space between" box. Irritating. But thanks for pointing out this feature.

What Ben said--there isn't consistency. For example, resizing vector shapes still requires you to hold the shift key to constrain proportions. Would a new user intuitively understand this? Personally, I found the change especially annoying because I wasted a lot of time searching for bugs in my app--deleting preference files and the like--since it didn't occur to me that such a standard thing would suddenly be changed. I searched the Adobe forums to see what was causing the problem, and got nothing useful, until I encountered the separate "Photoshop Family" forum (I can't say I understand why Adobe hosts two community forums for Photoshop). Is there some place Adobe announced this that I missed? The way the "Quality Engineer" (who I guess works for Adobe?) described it wasn't very helpful to me, either: "Photoshop 20.0 proportional transform is now the default behavior of transform in Photoshop (except with regard to vector graphics)." Saying "proportional transform is now the default behavior of transform" makes sense in hindsight, but seeing it in the middle of the confusion didn't make it clear to me that we were supposed to stop holding down the shift key.

If you're talking about shapes you made with the rectangle tool, it's apparently the opposite of the picture-resizing system. Go to your shape layer, hit "command-T," and just grab any handle to resize the width or height. If you hold down the shift key, the proportions will be constrained.

It turned out I still have my penultimate Wacom driver (WacomTablet_6.3.17-5) on my machine, so I went back to that, and it's faster than the really old one, and the shift/option/command keys are now more like normal in Photoshop/InDesign/Illustrator. I think the newest driver (WacomTablet_6.3.19-6) must have caused some of the issue.

Update: I tried restarting in "safe" mode, and the key commands work now, so i guess there's some kind of conflict. I just updated my Wacom driver, but I had the problem before that. Someone on an older thread said they went back to a really old Wacom driver. The only old one I could get is from my old laptop, and when that one's installed the key commands work, but the pen is horribly slow. It seems like this might be a conflict with Wacom.

I've found some old threads on option and shift keys not working in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, but their fixes didn't help me, and some of the threads are quite old, so I thought I should start a new one. I'm basically having the same problem as justine.dechaine did on Jan. 21, 2016, but updating the apps didn't solve it for me. I think the problem is related to my recent upgrade to El Capitan. I borrowed this text from Justine's earlier thread, as it describes my problem, too: "Key commands not working in Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop. Holding shift does not constrain proportions of frame Holding cmd does not resize contents of frame; only frame itself Space bar does not activate hand tool Cmd + space does not activate zoom Holding shift with the line tool does not draw a straight line Holding shift while moving an object doesn't keep that object at the same horizontal / vertical spot Holding option doesn't copy an object" I also can't make a selection in Photoshop--clicking on the layer while holding the command key does not select the contents of the layer. Basically, I cannot get my work done until this problem is fixed. In Illustrator, I can't even select two objects at the same time. I've tried changing keyboards, updating my Wacom driver (but I realized later the problem has more to do with the keyboard than the drawing tablet), restarting, turning off all web browsers, repairing my hard drive with Disk Utility, checking for El Capitan updates--nothing has helped. Thanks for any tips you can give.

I figured out part of the problem: if you're using outlines from type, then probably some of your paths are compound paths. You can't do the Replace Spine thing with compound paths; they have to be just "paths" (as shown in the Appearance box). I ended up having to redraw the compound path. After I did that, the "Replace Spine" option reappeared. There must be a better way to turn a compound path into a regular path than by redrawing it, but I don't know. (I just found some options in another forum, but I haven't tried them.)

I am confused. Which is better for dropdown menus, jQuery or CSS? The argument about that earlier on this thread didn't seem to be resolved. I generally just want one level of dropdowns, but they need to work on mobile devices. I actually just realized today that my Dreamweaver CS5 even has Spry dropdown menus, but it sounds like maybe I shouldn't bother with them at all. But what should I substitute? I find JavaScript very difficult to work with, btw.
