Moving your images to an external hard drive won't impact performance at all. Leave the catalog and other associated files on the C drive. Just move your library of images to the external drive, and everything will be just fine. I have my images distributed across three different external drives and LrC performs just fine. LrC simply needs to know where the images are located. All of the activity takes place in the catalog. As long as the external hard drive is connected so that LrC knows that the images are there, that is all that is necessary. I'm not sure why you would want to delete "previous import" files. Previous import simply take you to the folder of images that you last imported. It is a quick method to return to your most recent activity. After you import again, those images and their folder will begin showing up in the folder history in LrC.   If you delete "previous import" files then you are deleting images from your most recent import. If you are getting JPEG images then you seemingly must be using the "save as" command in Photoshop because in the preferences in LrC the two options for external editing are PSD and TIF. Photoshop literally cannot save changes to your raw images. Surely you must understand that. Raw images are proprietary, and are read-only. If you send a  raw image from LrC to Photoshop and make adjustments and save that image then a new image has to be created. Why would you not want that image in your LrC library? ... View more

It's not clear to me what you mean when you indicate that this only started happening recently. I have been using Lightroom for many years, and whenever an image is sent from Lightroom to Photoshop the workflow has always returned a finished image (PSD or TIF) to Lightroom. It has been a round-trip work flow, always. If you don't want that then don't import the images into Lightroom in the first place. Simply open them in Bridge or Photoshop. If you are working on raw images, and choose to send the raw image to Photoshop, it will always be necessary for Photoshop to save an image in a different format. I think what is happening is that Lightroom is transitioning from the JPEG preview to the preview that includes the adjustments applied by whatever gets applied on import. Sounds like the problem is with your preset. Having exposure adjustment one of the parameters of the preset seems rather restrictive to me. But that is your choice. Good luck. ... View more

From my perspective, it appears that what Lightroom is doing is first showing the embedded preview until it is able to adjust for whatever you have done in Lightroom. Perhaps (notice "perhaps") your monitor brightness is set too high. Without seeing the entire Basic panel to see what adjustments have been made, it is difficult to evaluate what has been done. The backup of a catalog will contain all of the editing record of what was done to those raw images. However, it will not contain the raw images. If you can associate that catalog with the raw images in the same folder they were previously contained in then it would be possible to export JPEG copies containing all of those edits. And, if that catalog is the catalog you are synchronizing with the cloud, you would be able to create collections and synchronize those images with the cloud.   Of course, this is assuming you are using Lightroom Classic. ...
