A couple of observations: If you Define it as a , Custom Shape, and use that to drag out with the Shape tool, the controls do .show up in the Properties panel. Getting the size and placement of the dragged-out Shape right would be a pain. Also, if you have a "non-pen"Shape, with the controls in the Properties panel, setting the Pen to Combine Shapes will cause the controls to disappear as soon as you lay down the first point. I can't see any reason for this behavior, so I would agree it's a bug.

I would recommend trying this: In the drop down menu on the left side of the Option bar, select the "Classic Gradient" option. Then, in the Mode drop down, select Multiply. I usually set the Method to Classic.

You might try reaching out to your local public library. They may direct you to a local document recovery service, or maybe something that can be done at the library itself. One possibility is to photograph it under ultraviolet light.

When I viewed both the extracted and desired images side-by-side (after changing the desired from indexed to RGB), the green channel looks the closest between the two. The red and blue look quite different. The extracted looks like a mask from Select > Color Range or a conversion to Lab color mode or something. Are you extracting from within Photoshop, or something external?

Open the various Swatch groups. For each, select the Swatches in that group (not he group itself), and drag them to the top of the panel. You will have the now empty groups, which you can either keep or delete.

Maybe add a couple of striped Pattern Fill layers, one set to the angle and scale for the Green channel, and one for the Blue channel, with appropriate blending modes, probably at low opacity.

You can do this with Gradient Maps. Put a Gradient Map above an empty layer, and make a Clipping Mask of them: Set the foreground/background colors to the default black and white. In the Brush Settilng panel, make sure Color Dynamics ticked, and the Apply Per Tip box checked, with Control set to Fade. It usually takes some trial and error to get the length of the Fade just right. I usually stroke a path when I do this so the brushstroke will be in the same place and same length.

In your screen shots, the scaled down pattern is still tiled seamlessly. The background layer looks like one instance of the pattern. If your goal is to have a new, smaller pattern, hide the other layers, and scale the image down with Image Size, and Edit > Define Pattern. Be sure not to save the scaled original. One advantage to doing this is getting finer control on the scaling amount. Image Size lets you scale to fractional percentages, but a scaled Pattern Fill layer is restricted to whole numbers.

If you are logged into your Adobe account, go to Manage Account. In the top menu, there is an item Plans and Payment > Activated Devices, which gives an option to deactivate that device. I did this on a recently retired computer. It's doubtful I will install CS6 on my new computer, so I can't be certain it worked, but my old one doesn't show on the list of Activated Devices anymore.
